Biography

He was educated at the University of Miami in Ohio , the University of Michigan and Harvard University , and then moved to Princeton University , where he became a student of Solomon Lefschetz , defending a thesis on universal homology groups. He worked at the University of Chicago ( 1939 - 1942 ), the University of Michigan ( 1942 - 1947 ), then until the end of his life at Princeton University.

Almost all of Steenrod’s works are devoted to topology , especially algebraic topology , and to the closest disciplines, such as homological algebra and category theory . Of great importance are his work in the field of . He introduced additional operations on the cohomology ring , generalizing the Kolmogorov – Alexander cup products (the so-called “ Steenrod squares ”), and also introduced the so-called reduced degrees of Steenrod. Steenrod made a great contribution to the development of the theory of stratified spaces, his book "The Topology of Oblique Products" (in the Russian translation so called bundles ) became classical. Together with Eilenberg, Steenrod created the famous axiomatics of homology theory. His contribution to the creation of popular literature on topology is also important, where he explains the basic concepts and some profound theorems in a language accessible to the student, but with complete rigor.
