Early life
John Riley Tanner was born on a farm near the town of Boonville in Warrick County, Indiana . His family moved to Illinois when he was a child; he grew up on a farm near Carbondale .
Enrolled in the 98th Illinois Infantry Regiment at the age of 19, during the Civil War. When the 98th Infantry Regiment was disbanded in June 1865, Tanner was transferred to the 61st Infantry Regiment. After the disbandment of the 61st Regiment, he returned to southern Illinois and settled in Clay County.
Died May 23, 1901 , buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. [one]
Legacy
John Tanner opposed the use of violence and also spoke out for equal rights for African Americans . But its principles were not actively supported by any of the successful politicians.
Tanner was fondly remembered by both the unions and the African Americans who benefited from his policies. Their donations helped build the mausoleum in which John Tanner is now buried.
