Biography
Stephen Parrino was born in 1958 . He grew up on Long Island , studied at State University of New York (SUNY), studied art at Parsons School .
Parrino began to engage in art in the late 1970s, driven, as he himself said, by a "necrophilic interest" in painting, which at that time was declared dead. In 1981, he separated the canvas from the stretcher to create rough, folded, split surfaces, reaching the literal deconstruction of the painting. He began to exhibit in 1984 as part of a group of artists. He worked and lived in New York until his tragic death.
Stephen Parrino combined pop culture and modernism , mixing the aesthetics of the " Angels of Hell " and minimalism . The artist was for the canvas what Pete Townsend was for the guitar: destruction was the main technique in his creative process. Parrino worked on glossy panels (black and silver were his favorite) and canvases with a hammer and saw; created “shapeless canvases”, as he called them, by means of dislocations and deformations.
Early in the morning of January 1, 2005, he returned from a New Year's party in Williamsburg County ( Brooklyn ). On Kent Avenue, two blocks from his home, lost control of the motorcycle and was thrown onto the pavement [1] [2] .
