Secret (cryptography)

Enigma cryptographic machine design

Secret ( English shadow ) - a set of data necessary to decrypt a message.

In primitive ciphers, the secret is the permutation algorithm . In general, the secret is a combination of encryption algorithm and keys. For example, in an Enigma cryptographic machine, the secret was:

  1. Machine design itself
  2. Encryption Options - A Set of Disks and Initial Settings
  3. Key

In modern encryption algorithms, the key is the only secret. When encrypting with an asymmetric key, the secret is the private key .
