In the XVII - XVIII centuries, this territory is part of New France. Under the Paris Treaty of 1763, Canada passes under British rule. According to the Quebec Act of 1774, the shores of the Great Lakes are annexed to the province of Quebec . Following the recognition of the independence of the United States , thousands of American loyalists are moving to Canada. Since the banks of the St. Lawrence River (modern-day Quebec) were already settled by the French Canadians, most new arrivals settled where now is the south of Ontario. They were not comfortable with French law and land management (the " senior system "), which still existed in the province of Quebec. Therefore, in 1791, the province of Quebec was divided into two parts - Upper Canada and Lower Canada .

February 1, 1796, it was decided to move the capital of Upper Canada to York, to reduce the risk of attack from the United States .

Upper Canada is almost entirely English-speaking (unlike Lower, French-speaking). In 1837 - 1838, an armed struggle for independence began in both Canada. In both cases, the rebels are defeated. To reduce the discontent of the population and accelerate the assimilation of the French Canadians, Upper and Lower Canada are united in a single colony - the United Province of Canada - and give it real internal self-government. In 1867, Canada was again divided into Upper (Ontario) and Lower (Quebec), after which both provinces entered the newly formed Canadian Confederation , which still exists.
