Annenkova Island

Annenkov Island ( Eng. Annenkov Island ) - an uninhabited island in the southern Atlantic Ocean , 13 km west of South Georgia . Administratively, it is part of the overseas territory of Great Britain South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (that is, it belongs to the United Kingdom, but is not a part of it).

The island is almost round, 7.5 miles in diameter. The highest point of Annenkova Island, which is 6 km long, is Mount Olstad Peak, which rises 650 m above sea level.

There is practically no vegetation on the island. Nevertheless, you can visit the island only with special permission, as it is a nesting site for more than 500 pairs of wandering albatrosses ( Diomedea exulans ).

History

The island was discovered on January 20, 1775 by James Cook during his second trip to the Southern Ocean . The island was originally named Pickersgil Island in honor of the lieutenant on the ship HMS Resolution . The real name was given to the island on December 15 ( 27 ), 1819 by the expedition of Faddey Faddeevich Bellingshausen , who named it in honor of Lieutenant sloop “Mirny” Mikhail Annenkov .

Population

The island is uninhabited (2012).
