This building was built by the artist’s father in the early 1900s, and Marc Chagall spent his youthful years here, which he later wrote about in the autobiographical book My Life. The Memorial House Museum was opened here in 1997 . It presents household items of the turn of the XIX - XX centuries , as well as copies of archival documents and the artist's works, telling about the years of life of Marc Chagall and his parents' family in Vitebsk.

Quotes

Alexander Shatsky ( 2000 ):

As for the House-Museum, I think that it is simply impossible to restore it for the period of life in it of the Shagalov family. When I first saw everything ready-made, the impression of a remake was very strong. And not even because of the house itself, which is put in such an order that the Shagal family would be madly glad if their house was repaired so much during their lifetime. It has some kind of completely indestructible museum, decoration. Although I believe that Vitebsk was following the organic path: it was impossible to do as it was under Chagall, therefore, having understood everything that was around and inside the house, it was necessary to reconstruct it to the level of technical capabilities of 1997. This is what they did. I really like that in the courtyard of the house in 1998 archaeological excavations were carried out - this has an amazing breath of authenticity, something very exciting. And all the other things - they can be treated differently. It turned out that the courtyard is now a place for holding some kind of social events. But what to do? There are no alternatives. [2]
