Early years
As a child, Gilberto lived in the city of Lagoa da Prata with a blacksmith father and a housewife mother. Gilbert had three sisters [3] . His family lived in a small house that his father built in the area of Usina Lusiania. Despite the financial difficulties due to which all children lived in the same room, the future footballer had a relatively carefree childhood. So, he wrote that in his life there was no responsibility, he played football on the street with relatives and friends, and they never faced drugs or violence [4] . In 1988, at the age of 12, he got a chance to break out of poverty and take up football by joining the America Minero youth team. It was over the years in America Minero that Gilbert was taught defensive discipline, he played the position of central defender. In his spare time from football, Gilberto studied with his father as a furniture maker, which came in handy for him in subsequent years. In 1991, father Gilberto retired, his 15-year-old son had to provide his entire family with money, the task was complicated by the poor health of his mother [5] .
| We were a poor family, and we had to work hard. That is why, when I was still a boy, I had to get a laborer and still work at the factory. But I am glad that I had a difficult start. It makes me be in solidarity with people who are not so lucky [1] . |
Due to the low salary at America Mineiro, he was forced to quit football and look for work, he had to go as a laborer, a carpenter and a worker in a confectionery factory. This, it seemed to him, was the end of his childhood dream [6] . As a factory worker, Gilberto earned about £ 50 a month at the 2002 rate [3] [7] . After three years of work in the factory, the 18-year-old Gilberto decided to try his luck in football again by entering the local youth academy. His stay at the academy did not last long due to the aggravation of the situation in the family - his mother's health deteriorated. He soon returned to work at a confectionery factory with little hope of resuming his football career.
Club career
Career start in Brazil
In 1997, Gilbert's friends convinced him to make another attempt to return to football. As a result, on June 1, 1997, he re-signed a contract with America Mineiro, this time to play on the main team. At the age of 22, Gilberto played as a central defender for the first team. During his first season with America Minero, he was considered one of the key players in the club, despite being criticized by some fans for the inconsistency [7] . He helped the team win Serie B , and therefore get promoted to Serie A [8] .
At the end of the 1998 season, the team returned to Serie B. In the third season, Gilberto played with America Minero, played 20 matches and scored one goal, and also helped the club finish in second place in the Mineiro League . In 2000, at the age of 24, he joined America's rival, Atletico Mineiro. The following season, on the initiative of the coach, Carlos Alberto Parreira , Gilberto moved from the center of defense to midfield, where he showed the best results. He scored three goals in the 2001 season and was the opening for Atletico Mineiro [9] .
Arsenal
After the 2002 World Cup, Gilberto attracted the attention of two clubs in the English Premier League ( Aston Villas and Arsenal ), which were fighting to sign a contract with a football player. In August, while still being an Atletico Mineiro player, Gilberto joined Arsenal during a pre-season tour in Austria , everything went to the signing of the contract. However, difficulties arose when Atletico Mineiro was imposed a transfer embargo in connection with the non-payment of wages to some club players, including Gilbert [10] [11] . There was also the issue of obtaining work permits in the UK for Gilberto [12] . However, on August 7, 2002, he nevertheless joined Arsenal for a fee of £ 4.5 million. After buying Gilberto, Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger said:
| What I loved about him was his tendency not to complicate his life. He can play all over the field, but he plays only ahead of the defense - this is what he does best [10] . |
Accustomed to living in small Brazilian cities, Gilberto at first could not adapt to a new lifestyle in London [13] . Nevertheless, he mastered on the field very quickly. He made his debut for Arsenal on August 11, 2002, substituting for the match against Liverpool in the second half of the English Super Cup game in which he scored a winning goal [14] . At the beginning of the 2002/03 season, Gilberto faced stiff competition for a midfield position with his compatriot, Ed Gaspard . After two substitutions, Gilberto finally left the starting lineup on August 27 and helped Arsenal defeat West Bromwich Albion with a score of 5: 2. Gilberto also showed good form in setting a new record for the fastest goal in the UEFA Champions League , scoring 20.07 seconds after the starting whistle against PSV on September 25, 2002 [15] . However, the problems with his transfer continued, since not all issues were completely resolved. As a result, in November 2002, Gilbert ordered his lawyers to prepare a lawsuit against Atletico Mineiro for unpaid salaries. In the second half of the 2002/03 season, he remained a player at the base of Arsenal. Despite the loss of form at the end of the season, he won the FA Cup medal, playing in the finals at the Millennium Stadium , Arsenal defeated Southampton with a minimum score [16] .
The 2003/04 season was even better for Gilberto, he played an important role in winning the championship by Arsenal, and the club spent the whole season without defeat. During the season, he played in 32 of the 38 matches of the Arsenal in the Premier League. His next season also began successfully, he scored the first goal in the Super Cup against Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium, the Gunners won 3-1. During the first games of the season, he began to experience severe back pain, and after a match with Bolton Wanderers on September 27, 2004, a scan showed that he had cracks in his vertebrae. At first it was reported that he would be out of action for a month [17] . Later there were reports that the injury could disable him before the end of the season [18] .
The doctor advised Gilbert to wear a corset for three months to help heal damaged bone. Gilberto returned to his native Brazil for the period of rehabilitation [19] . During his stay there, he doubted whether he could play football, suggesting that injury could jeopardize his career. However, a long time of rehabilitation paid off, as he fully recovered. He celebrated his return with a 4-1 victory over Norwich City on April 22, 2005. Throughout the 2004/05 season, Gilberto was treated for 7 months and played only 17 matches. Its absence, combined with the Arsenal team’s general decline, led to many discussions about the importance of Gilbert for the team [20] , some noted that it was very difficult for Arsenal without it [10] . In the difficult season of 2004/05, Gilberto with Arsenal took second place in the Premier League and won the FA Cup, winning the final of Manchester United in the penalty shoot-out [21] .
In June 2005, football agent Jacques Lichtenstein filed a lawsuit against Atlético Mineiro against the transfer to Gilbert in 2002. Liechtenstein’s lawyer claimed that the agent and his unofficial partner, Ronnie Rosenthal , never received the allegedly agreed 10% transfer fee, as was the case with Gilberto in July 2002 [22] . Arsene Wenger and Arsenal’s vice president, David Dane, testified in court, stating that Arsenal had a direct relationship with Atletico Mineiro and that no agent was involved in the transaction [23] . The case was led by Judge Raymond Jack, who on June 29 ruled against Liechtenstein and decided to pay Atletico Mineiro £ 94,000 in court costs [24] . A year later, the case could again bring problems to Arsenal, when the former player of the team, Ashley Cole , criticized the club for “hypocrisy and double standards” for the sake of getting Gilbert [25] .
When the 2005/06 season began, legal issues were resolved. After the departure of the team captain, midfielder Patrick Vieira , the authority of Gilberto increased in the team [4] . After a couple of months in September 2005, Gilberto’s desire to continue his career in the club led to the extension of the contract with Arsenal until June 2009 [26] . A month later, on October 18, 2005, Gilberto first appeared on the field with a captain's armband in the match against Sparta Praha [27] . Although Gilberto had a period of poor play during the winter months of the season, his good defensive qualities during the final stages of the Champions League (in particular, games against Madrid Real Madrid [28] , Juventus [29] [30] and Villarreal [31] ) brought him praise. May 17, 2006 Gilberto played for Arsenal in the Champions League final against Barcelona , which beat the Gunners 2-1 [32] .
After leaving the club, defender Saul Campbell and striker Dennis Bergkamp (the latter completed his career) in the summer of 2006, Gilberto became Arsenal's vice-captain for the 2006/07 season [33] . He prepared well for the season, scoring his first goal at the Dutch AFAS stadium in a preseason friendly match against AZ . Then he scored the first goal of Arsenal in the championship at Emirates , the match ended in a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa. Arsenal continued to show good results, and Gilberto scored several goals, and also performed quality as captain, while Thierry Henry was injured [34] . Gilberto and his agent (Paulo Villana) confirmed the reluctance of the player to break the contract with the “gunners” [35] . Meanwhile, Gilberto remained in good shape until the second half of the season. Although Arsenal managed to take only fourth place in the league, he ended the season with the club's top scorer after Van Persie with 10 goals in the Premier League [36] . An explanation of his unusually high performance is the fact that Henry was injured twice, while Gilbert began to execute a penalty as a captain. The performance of Gilbert, combined with his individual good game in midfield and the help of the young players of the team, made some Arsenal fans and football experts consider Gilbert the best player in the club and one of the best in the Premier League of that season [37] [38] .
The start of the 2007/08 season was marked by the departure of Arsenal's captain Thierry Henry, who joined Barcelona [39] . This fact, combined with the fact that Gilberto was Arsenal's vice-captain in the 2006/07 season, led many people to assume that he would become the new captain [40] [41] . However, to Gilbert's surprise [42] , the captain's armband was given to William Gallas [43] . After returning to Arsenal's preseason training late with his participation in the America's Cup [44], Gilberto missed the start of the season and eventually lost his place in the first team due to the arrival of young midfielder Mathieu Flamini . This reinforced the rumors about Gilberto moving to Italy , as he was unhappy being on the bench at Arsenal [45] . However, reports that the club no longer relies on Gilberto were refuted by Wenger, who insisted that Gilberto remain in Arsenal to fight for his place in the lineup [46] [47] . Despite this, in October 2007, rumors appeared in the press that Gilberto was angry with Wenger for asking him to play on the defensive in the League Cup match against Sheffield United , the player refused to comply with the coach’s instructions [48] . Gilberto finished the game in midfield, moreover [49] he and Wenger denied rumors of disagreement with each other [50] [51] . Gilberto subsequently noted that at that time he was not happy to sit in the replacement, he remained to fight for his place in the club [52] . Also in October, Gilbert lost the captain's armband to the national team in favor of Lucio , who recovered from his injury.
In the winter months of the 2007/08 season, Gilberto played little for the Gunners, although he retained his place in the Brazilian national team after playing several matches for Celesao [53] . Later, becoming more and more disappointed with the lack of regular playing practice, Gilberto admitted in February 2008 that Wenger made him feel “completely useless” [54] . Despite this, he refused to make a concrete decision about his future [55] ; this prompted Wenger to negotiate with Gilberto. Without playing for Arsenal, he focused on getting into the Brazilian Olympic team at the Beijing Games in August 2008 [56] , but he never played at the tournament. Gilbert was reported to have passed the UK citizenship test and was subsequently required to obtain a British passport [57] . In April, Gilberto's situation changed for the better, he played 5 matches - a significant part of the total number of games for the season (12) - and managed to score a goal. The ball was scored in a game with Reading on April 19, although at first it was counted as an own goal [58] , the Premier League Doubtful Goals Committee eventually scored a goal for Gilbert [59] . However, the return to Gilbert in the 2007/08 season did not help Arsenal win any trophy. The club subsequently faced the probability of several players leaving [60] ; among those who were rumored to be leaving the team were Flamini, the player who drove Gilbert from the first team. The Frenchman eventually moved to Milan [61] on May 6, and a free position remained in the midfield of Arsenal. The probability that Gilberto will leave the club in the summer of 2008, as a result, has fallen, and Wenger noted that he would like to keep Gilberto in the club [62] . The player said he wants to stay [63] and possibly even extend his contract with Arsenal. Gilberto finished the 2007/08 season with 36 matches for Arsenal, however, only 12 he started from the first minutes [64] .
Panathinaikos
After the summer international games for Brazil, Gilberto was seriously determined to move to the Greek Panathinaikos [65] [66] . The contract was concluded when Gilberto negotiated all conditions with the Athenian side on July 17, 2008, the transfer amount was not announced [67] . During his first season at the club, Gilberto helped the team reach the 1/8 finals of the Champions League, where the club lost 3–2 to Villarreal. He managed to win the 2009/10 Greek Championship and Cup with Panathinaikos, being the main defensive midfielder, he played many good matches. In the final home game for Gilberto for Panathinaikos on May 23, 2011, he scored the winning goal against PAOK in the Greek playoffs for a place in the Champions League, and Gilberto was the only goal in the match [68] . Two days later, he played his last match for the club, “Panathinaikos” won with a score of 2: 0 AEK [69] .
Return to Brazil
On May 23, 2011, Gilberto ended his 9-year career in Europe by signing an 18-month contract with Brazilian Gremio from Porto Alegre [70] .
In the past, Gilberto hinted that he might one day return to Brazil in order to play for Atletico Mineiro [71] .
On November 10, 2012, it was confirmed that Gilbert’s wish would come true, he signed a preliminary contract with Atlético [72] .
International Career
Game Style
According to ProZone (the data analysis system used by football managers), which was published by The Sunday Times in January 2007, Gilberto, along with Paul Scholes of Manchester United and Frank Lampard of Chelsea , is one of the few midfielders in England, having achieved the effectiveness of the "elite level of the Champions League" [71] .

Beyond Football
In an interview, Gilberto said that after completing his football career, he would like to “live on a small farm, ride a horse, and keep the whole family around” [97] .
He created the Street League, a British charity that holds football matches for the homeless, refugees, and asylum seekers. In June 2003, Gilberto went on a tour of Brazil with 17 Street League players. [98] The tour included visiting his hometown, Lagoa da Prata and playing against local favela teams at the Maracana Stadium .
Gilberto is a great music lover. In his free time, he plays mandolin and guitar. When he first arrived in England, he took mandolin lessons and played at a local pub in St. Albans. He later began to learn to play the guitar [99] . Like many Brazilian footballers, he played samba with his Celesao teammates when they rested in between matches.
A giant anteater is named in his honor at the London Zoo . Gilberto was "adopted" by an animal that he received from the winner of the London Zoo contest. The footballer called the South American animal “my slightly more hairy brother” [100] .
