Biography
He studied at the Second St. Petersburg Gymnasium , but, without completing a course in it, in 1847 he entered the Moscow School of Painting and Sculpture , from which two years later he transferred to the students of the Imperial Academy of Arts . After graduating from a course at the Academy with the title of free artist for βPortrait of the Cornet of Kireevβ (1854), he devoted himself to watercolor, mainly portrait painting, and soon gained well-deserved fame in this area.
In 1859, for the portraits of Mrs. von Kruse, her children and her brother Peter Petrovich Sokolov, he received the title of academician of watercolor painting.
In 1862 he married Anastasia Mikhailovna Zagryazhskaya and left painting. Until 1876, he served as an assistant to the chief of the railway, managing the estate of A. V. Kireeva (A. S. Pushkin wrote about her), retoucher in the photographic studio of Robillard, and an official of the βMutual Land Loan Societyβ.
Returning from Orel to St. Petersburg, he resumed painting classes.
In 1881, he joined the Partnership of Traveling Art Exhibitions as an exhibitor and from that time very often exhibited his new works on them, which can be seen in the Museum of Emperor Alexander III in St. Petersburg and the Tretyakov Gallery . He gave lessons in watercolor painting to Sofya Kramskoy (daughter of the artist I.N. Kramskoy) , who later became an artist.
Repeatedly painted portraits of the Dowager Empress Maria Fyodorovna and other women of the imperial family. In 1882 he was invited to create the "Coronation Album of Alexander III ", for which he painted portraits of Alexander III and his wife Empress Maria Fedorovna.
From 1889 to 1897 he served as the curator of the Museum of the Imperial Academy of Arts [4] .
Full member of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1896) [5] .
