Fixed numbers in football

A game number can be assigned by a football club to a specific player in recognition of his merits in the event of a tragic death or serious injury that caused him to end his career, as well as in other similar situations. Fixing a game number means that no one else will enter the field in a T-shirt with the indicated number if the decision is not canceled or if the tournament rules require using this number for the club's application.

Tradition

A similar practice appeared in North American game sports, and in football it began to take root in the 1990s , as previously players received numbers for specific matches . As a rule, the starting lineup players received numbers from 1 to 11 depending on the position, and spare - numbers starting from the 12th. As a result, the same player may not have a permanent number during the season due to a change in position, loss of place in the starting lineup and other reasons.

Game numbers are usually assigned to players who have left the team or have completed a sports career. In recognition of the merits of an outstanding football player, the club assigns his game number to him, so he is withdrawn from circulation in the team. In other cases, the number is assigned to the tragically killed active footballer: in this way, clubs honor the memory of players such as Jason Mayele , Vittorio Mero , Marc-Vivien Foe , Miklos Feher , Ray Jones , Antonio Puerta , Sergey Perkhun or Robert Enke . In the third situation, the number is assigned to the player who was seriously injured and was forced to leave the big sport, but survived: for example, the Norwegian club Fredrikstad secured the number to Dagfinn Enerly , who broke his neck during the match and as a result remained paralyzed [1 ] .

The national teams of Argentina and Cameroon were unable to secure the 10th number for Diego Maradona and the 17th for Marc-Vivienne Foe, respectively, since this contradicts the FIFA rules regarding the distribution of numbers in the final international tournaments, although in other competitions, as well as in friendly matches the choice of rooms is entirely left to national associations. However, the 10th number, under which Pele previously played, remained immortalized differently and in most football teams belongs to the best player of the attacking plan.

Some clubs dedicate a game number to their fans and also withdraw it from circulation. As a rule, this is number 12, which corresponds to the expression "twelfth player", which designates club fans. The following teams assigned number 12 to their fans:
