Biography
Sultan Hashim graduated in 1975 from the National Security Institute in Baghdad with a degree in Military Intelligence . In 1980-1988 Sultan Hashim participated in the war against Iran . Sultan Hashim Ahmed gained a reputation as one of the most daring Iraqi officers during the Iran-Iraq war, and was awarded for this by Saddam Hussein. In 1988, as commander of the 1st corps of the Iraqi army, he played a major role in the operation of Anfal against the Kurds . Sultan Hashim survived several purges and became the highest ranking officer in the Iraqi army. During the Gulf War, at-Tai was appointed commander of the Third Corps of the Iraqi Army, and then he signed a ceasefire agreement with the commander of the Multinational Force, Norman Schwarzkopf in Safwan .
In April 1995, he was appointed chief of staff of the ground forces, and in July, minister of defense. Long before the war began, in February 2003, the Guardian newspaper reported that the Minister of Defense was placed under house arrest. But the minister continued to speak on television. After a week of negotiations, on September 19, 2003, he surrendered in Mosul to fighters of the 101st Airborne Division . Sultan Hashim Ahmad, along with a number of other associates of Saddam, appeared before a special Iraqi tribunal in the Anfal case. On June 24, 2007, he was sentenced to death by hanging for war crimes against humanity. His execution was scheduled for September 11, 2007 , but the American side refused to extradite him to the Iraqi authorities.
On December 2, 2008, an Iraqi tribunal sentenced Sultan Hashim to 15 years in prison for suppressing the Shiite uprising in 1991. [one]
