Bechar ( Arabic: بشار ) is a city in the west of Algeria , the administrative center of the province of the same name .

Geography
It is located about 1150 km south-west of the capital, Algeria , 852 km northeast of the city of Tindouf and 80 km from the border with Morocco . It is located at an altitude of 747 m above sea level, on the banks of the Oued Beshar River [1] , which crosses the city from the north-east to the south-west. The rocky elevation of Jebel Bechar is located southeast and east of the city, reaching a height of 1206 m. Further to the northeast, an even higher ridge of Jebel Antar rises, reaching a height of 1953 m.
Climate
The climate of the city is characterized as arid , with very hot summers and warm winters, despite the rather high altitude. Precipitation is extremely small, the average annual rate is only 75-85 mm.

Population
The population according to 2008 is 165 627 people [2] ; according to 1998, it numbers 134 954 people [3] . Bechar is the largest city in the southwestern part of the country. The literacy rate of the population is 86.4% (91.4% of men and 81.4% of women) [4] .
Economics
Bechar is the center of the mining region (development of coal , iron and manganese ore). There are food tasting, sewing, metalworking enterprises. Until 1907, when a coal deposit was found here, Bechar was a small town, like other settlements in the area. Agriculture also plays an important role in the economy. The area of agricultural land in the territory of the Beshar commune is 8384 ha, of which 5100 ha are irrigated land [5] . About 109,000 date palms grow in the commune, which occupy a total area of 910 ha [6] . Vegetables, cereals, almonds and others are also grown. There is animal husbandry, mainly sheep and goat husbandry. According to data for 2009, the number of sheep is 19,067; the number of goats - 16 664; camels - 1766; cattle - 444 [7] .
Tourism is limited. There are 10 hotels in the city [8] . Major tourist attractions include sand dunes, palm groves, ancient ksar and the fort.
Not far from the city was the former French Hammagir cosmodrome.
Transport
The main road passing through Bechar is Highway 6, connecting it with the cities of Misheria, Saeed , Mascara and Oran (in the north), as well as the city of Adrar (in the south). The total length of roads in the commune is 207.5 km [9] . There is a narrow gauge railway. There is an airport 4 km northwest of the city.
