The son of a Saratov tradesman, Popov grew up and was brought up in a split. Upon the death of his father, who gave Popov to the schismatic icon painter, Popov abandoned the writing of icons in a schismatic spirit and converted to Orthodoxy.
Appointed in 1874 as a traveling diocesan missionary of the Saratov diocese, Popov was ordained a priest in 1881, moved to Stavropol in the same position in 1890, and to the Penza diocese in 1894.
In the Saratov diocese, Popov studied in detail the schism and set forth all its manifestations in essays and correspondence (in the “Saratov Listka”, “Modern Izvestia”, “Church and Public Herald”, “Sarat. Eparch. Vedomosti”, “Saratov Diary”, “Astrakh Diocese. Vedomosti ”, etc.).
Separately, Popov published:
- "The schism and its guides" (Saratov, 1890) ,
- “Archive of the schismatic bishop Ambrose” (Stavropol, 1893) ,
- "The flower bed is honeyed" (schismatic essay, Saratov, 1891),
- “What is the reason for the appearance of schismatic sects?” (Story of the Old Believer, Stavropol, 1893).
