Gameplay
The gameplay in “ The Neverhood ” is similar to traditional point-and-click puzzle games, but differs significantly from other games of the genre. In the game there is no interface that provides access to the property of the hero. During the game there will be several items available (flask with water, matches, etc.). There are 20 video cassettes scattered around the game world, which are necessary to uncover the storyline and to get the last key for the final game. In the location with the last cassette is a huge text that describes the background of the game world. In “Non-Forms”, he is replaced by a collection of IT-humor, and “NEVERVHUDO” offers the player a collection of sadistic quatrains .
Story
The main character of the game is Kleimen ( English Klaymen ). The essence of the game lies in the search for 20 video cassettes, on which Willy Trombone tells the whole story of the world. The player will save the world Neverhud ( Eng. The Neverhood ), defeating the evil usurper Klogg. In the final of the game, the player must choose between the good and the bad side (respectively, the endings will be different).
Characters
Kleimen ( English Klaymen ) - the main character of the game, a man in a red shirt, brown shorts and with a single hair on his head. The protagonist of the tragedy that happened in his home country. That he has to go through and solve all the puzzles in the game. Clayman does not like to hurry, he is calm enough and does not often talk. On the chest, it has three strange buttons, the left and right need to open their own "safe" to store collected items, located in the stomach (of these two buttons, Kleimen uses the one closest to the player, depending on which side he has turned to him). The middle button Clayman presses to wake the player if he doesn’t move the mouse for a long time on the screen. A clayman created by Willie Trombone from the seed of life that leaped from the hands of Hoborg asleep.
Willie Trombone ( born Willie Trombone ) - Clayman's best friend, secret assistant, in fact, a cousin, cousin, son of Ottoborg, brother of Hoborg. Does not shine with the mind, but often helps Clayman throughout the game. He dies, falling with the robot Bill into the abyss, but in a good ending he is resurrected by Höborg.
Hoborg ( eng. Hoborg ) - the creator and ruler of the country Neverhud. His first friend was Clog, who then betrayed Hoborg. In the hall of fame ( eng. Hall of records ) of the country, he is called "Hoborg the Big Heart" because of his cordiality.
Klogg ( eng. Klogg ) - the first living creature created by Höborg. He was very jealous of the authorities of Hoborg and wanted to get a magic crown. He managed to trick her in by deception, but the crown had a negative effect on him, as a result, he changed a lot in appearance, and Höborg sank into eternal sleep . At the end of the game, the player is faced with a choice in which Klogg is doomed: in one of the situations he is hit by a cannonball and thrown into the abyss of plasticine space, in the other - Kleimen kills him with his own hands. In the game " Skullmonkeys " a story develops with flight into space. Klogg fell on a planet inhabited by a monkey race, which has a skull instead of a head. Wearing a skull and skin, he changed his name to Kloggmonkey [5] .
Big Rob Beat ( born Big Robot Bil ) - a huge fighting humanoid robot. When Klogg seized power, he changed his character to a bad one (there was a special switch inside Beal). According to the plot of the game, Kleiman climbed into the robot and returned to him a good character, after which Beal began to listen to him and also to think according to his heart. Fought the Clockwork Beast ( born Clockwork Beast ), which looked like a huge bird-robot, and Clogg's henchmen. From the shot of Klogg's gun, he fell and plunged into the cosmic abyss. In a good ending was revived by Hoborg
Development and release of the game
The idea of the plasticine world "The Neverhood" originated from Douglas Ten-Napel back in 1988 [5] . It consisted of seventeen works depicting a quaint clay city. In 1995, Douglas turned to Stephen Spielberg and his studio DreamWorks Interactive with the idea of creating a game made entirely of plasticine. All gaming environment and characters are made through clay animation . When creating the game world and the characters of the country "The Neverhood" 3 tons of clay were used [2] [~ 3] . After a year of collaboration between Dreamworks Interactive and Microsoft , the game went on sale [4] .

Skullmonkeys
In 1998, the sequel to the game from the same developers called Skullmonkeys was released. In contrast to The Neverhood, the second game in the series was made in the form of a two-dimensional platformer and was released only on the PlayStation game console. According to the plot of the game, the main villain Klogg, expelled by Kleiman from the world of Neuchud in the first game, lands on the planet Idznak, inhabited by cranes ( eng. Skullmonkeys ). He decides to seize power over the population of the planet in order to destroy Neverchud, and Clayman will have to stop Clogg.
Armikrog
In 2013, Kickstarter started a fundraising campaign for a new game from Pencil Test Studios, the company that created The Neverhood [10] [11] [12] . Not being a direct continuation of The Neverhood , the game Armikrog retains the main distinctive feature of The Neverhood - plasticine characters and scenery. According to the plot of the game, having suffered a crash on one of the planets, the main characters - the cosmic wanderer Tomminavt and his talking dog, Beak-Beak - find themselves in a fortress, from which they must find a way out.
June 27, 2013 fundraising for the development of the game was successfully completed: the developers collected about 975 thousand dollars (with the minimum amount for the successful funding specified by the developers, 900 thousand). The original release date for the game was July 2014, and the release date was later moved to the summer of 2015. September 30, 2015 “Armikrog” became available for Windows , Mac OS X and Linux , as well as for Wii U [13] . In addition, the game was translated from English into Spanish , Italian , German , Polish , Russian and French .
