Biography

Frank Herbert was born on October 8, 1920 in Tacoma , Washington , and graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle . From a young age I wanted to become a writer. In 1938 he graduated from high school, and in 1939, having lied about his age, he joined the Glendale Star newspaper [5] . He worked as a reporter and editor in various newspapers before becoming a professional writer.

During World War II, Herbert was a photographer in the Navy, but after 6 months of service he was commissioned. In 1941, he married Flora Parkinson, but divorced in 1945, in this marriage he had a daughter, Penny. In 1946, he entered the University of Washington, where he met Beverly Ann Stewart - she was the only person on the course except Herbert, who had published stories. In 1946 they got married, in 1947 their first son was born, and in 1951 their second.

The first work in the genre of science fiction - the story "Looking for something?" ( Eng. Looking for Something? ), Which was published in the journal Startling Stories (1952).

Throughout the 1950s, he published in magazines one and a half dozen stories and the novel "The Dragon in the Sea" ( Eng. The Dragon in the Sea , 1955). This novel was also later published under the name Under Pressure . However, the writer gained wide popularity after the publication in 1963 in the journal Analog of the novel Dune World, which became the first part of the novel Dune. Later in the same journal, the publication of a sequel called The Prophet of Dune began. In 1965, these two parts were combined into one full-fledged novel, which was released in a separate edition. The work has received worldwide recognition and has been awarded such prestigious awards in the field of science fiction, such as the Prize Nebula and Hugo . The novel quickly became one of the most popular science fiction novels of the 20th century . In the following years, Herbert penned the continuation of the story of a sand planet - the novels “The Messiah of Dune ” ( Eng. Dune Messiah , 1969), “ Children of the Dune ” ( Eng. Children of Dune , 1976), “ God the Emperor of Dune ” ( God Emperor of Dune (1981), Heretics of Dune (1984) and Chapter Dune ( Chapterhouse: Dune , 1985). The Dune Saga, which takes place in the distant future and lasts for five millennia, raises issues such as the survival of mankind in the process of evolution, environmental problems, the interaction of religion, politics and power. Many leading critics of the world [ who? ] consider this cycle a classic of science fiction, the most “bright” and “complete” representative of this genre [ specify ] . Frank Herbert's son, Brian Herbert , continued his father’s series of novels about the world of Dune .

Frank Herbert also wrote many other works, among which are “Dragon in the Sea” ( Eng. Dragon in the Sea , 1956), “Green Brain” ( Eng. The Green Brain , 1966), “Direction - Emptiness” ( Eng. Destination: Void , 1966), “Eyes of Heisenberg” ( Eng. The Eyes of Heisenberg , 1966), “Creators of Heaven” ( eng. The Heaven Makers , 1968), “Santaroga Barrier” ( eng. The Santaroga Barrier , 1968), “ Hellstrom's Hive ” ( English Hellstrom's Hive , 1973), dilogy “Star under the scourge” ( English Whipping Star , 1970) and “ The Dosadi Experiment ” ( English The Dosadi Experiment , 1977).

In 2003, Brian Herbert released Dreamer of Dune , a biography of his father, Frank Herbert. Work on this book began with the fact that Brian for many years had a journal in which he recorded the most significant events of the Herbert family. Later, these notes resulted in a large biography of his father.
