History
The company was founded in 1997 by Stuart Levy [1] and was originally called Mixx. At that time, they were selling the MixxZine manga logbook, as well as the Smile shojo manga anthology.
In 2002, the company began to publish manga in its original, non-mirrored form, positioning a new product for the US market as “100% Authentic Manga” (100% Authentic Manga), which quickly made Tokyopop the industry leader. Also a popular marketing idea among buyers was the marginal cost reduction of goods (up to $ 10 per), which also helped the company to gain serious market shares.
In the summer of 2004, Tokyopop began to publish manga and manhwa in Germany, and in the same year the company opened a representative office in the UK.
In March 2006, HarperCollins announced that it intends to collaborate with Tokyopop. [five]
Tokyopop also published the original English manga (made in the USA ) and was the largest publisher in this area. [6] [7] [8] This publishing house has published such works as " Dreams ", " Bizenghast ", " Dramacon ", " Van Von Hunter ", " Dark Subway ".
In March 2011, a wave of reductions swept through the company due to the bankruptcy of the largest buyer of Tokyopop - Borders Group , which owes a large amount to it. [9] In April 2011, it closed the US publishing house. According to an official statement, the television and film department of the company, as well as the European division of the publisher, do not close. [10] In October 2011, the company announced its intention to return to the American manga market, primarily by resuming the release of works, [11] licenses for which were previously returned to their original owners.
