“Gay, Slavs!” [1] [2] - a Slavic patriotic song. Originally the text of the anthem was written by Samuel Tomášík in 1834 under the title “Gay, Slovaks!” ( Slovak. Hej, Slováci! ) And since then began to be used as a hymn to the Pan-Slavic movement . Later, it was the anthem of the Czech Sokol Youth Sports and Political Movement, as the anthem of the First Slovak Republic ( 1939 - 1945 ), the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1945 - 1992 , and the anthem of the Union of Serbia and Montenegro in 1992 - 2006 . The song is also considered the second, unofficial anthem of the Slovaks . Her melody is based on the March of Dombrowski , which is a pro- Napoleonic reaction to the sections of Poland and the anthem of Poland since 1926 , but it has great differences in performance.

Since the XIX century, several versions of the Russian text have been known: a song translated by Nikolai Berg begins with the words: “Gay, Slavs, gay, Slavs! / There will be freedom for you, / If only your heart / Beats for the people ... " [1] , and Dmitry Agrenev-Slavyansky performed the text:" Gay, Slavs! still ours / Speech flows freely / While our heart is faithful / Beats for its people ... ” [3] .
