Born on September 28 ( October 10 ), 1863 , in the family of staff officer Afanasy Alexandrovich Obruchev (1833-1881), who received the rank of captain in 1864. The village of Klepenino, Rzhevsky district , Tver province [6] , where Obruchev was born, is the estate of his grandfather Alexander Afanasevich Obruchev (1796-1866), a general who received Polish lands for service in Poland. Great-grandfather Afanasy Fyodorovich Obruchev (1760-1827) was a builder of military fortresses on the western borders of Russia [7] . Mother - Polina Karlovna Obrucheva (nee Gertner,? - 1917), originally from Revel , daughter of a Lutheran pastor. Vladimir was the second child in the family.
Father's brother - Major General V. A. Obruchev . Father’s sister Maria Aleksandrovna Sechenova - Russia's first female ophthalmologist , evolutionary biologist who worked in the field of paleontology and geology; wife of academician I.M.Sechenov . The Sechenovs warmly welcomed Obruchev in the family estate of Klepenino, where he used the extensive family library.
Education
My father often moved on official business, and from three to seventeen years old Vladimir Obruchev lived in various cities of Poland , where he learned the Polish language [8] . Received home primary education. His mother spoke German and French and carried him with travel books.
He began his studies at the Brest gymnasium , then he studied at the Radom Gymnasium, and in 1876-1881, at the real school in Vilna . He graduated from the St. Petersburg Mining Institute in 1881-1886. In 1885 he completed a practice in the Urals .
Scientific and pedagogical work
In 1886 he received an offer from Professor I.V. Mushketov to take part in an expedition to Central Asia , where he discovered several ridges in the Nanshan mountains, Daursky and Borshchovochny ridges, and explored the Beishan plateau.
In 1887 he published the first scientific work “Sands and Steppes of the Trans-Caspian Region”, which was awarded the silver medal of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society.
In 1892-1894 he participated in the fourth expedition of Grigory Potanin as a geologist [9] . In 1895-1898 worked as the head of a mountain party in Eastern Siberia , providing the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway. The first full-time geologist of Siberia. In the study of geology and geomorphology, he considered himself the successor to the Russian geologist, geomorphologist and paleontologist, the Belarusian native Jan Dominicovich (Ivan Dementievich) Chersky , whom he personally knew.
After the Revolution of 1905-1907, he was a member of the Constitutional Democratic Party in Russia , heading its Tomsk Committee [10] .
In 1901-1912 he taught at the Tomsk Technological Institute of Emperor Nicholas II, was the first dean of the mining department of the institute.
In 1912, V. A. Obruchev had to part with teaching. [11] The tsarist officials understood that it was inconvenient to dismiss a free-thinking scientist of world renown, so he was offered to move to another institute. However, in other institutes there was no department of geology, and at the university, without a Ph.D., Obruchev could not teach. So a young and full of energy scientist with a worldwide reputation was retired at the age of 49 and had to deal with the analysis of old materials, consultations, and examinations. It was during this period that the plan matured and the novel Plutonium was written [12] .
Since 1916 - an honorary member of the Russian Mineralogical Society [13] .
In 1918-1921, he was a professor at the Tauride University in Simferopol [14] .
On February 6, 1919, Obruchev was awarded the degree of Doctor of Geognosy and Mineralogy by the Council of the Don (formerly Warsaw) University in the city of Rostov-on-Don (the Great Don Army ) [15] .
In 1921-1929, he was a professor in the Department of Applied Geology at the newly organized Moscow Mining Academy , a member of the board for academic affairs (from 1922) [16] .
Since 1930 - Chairman of the Commission for the Study of Permafrost . In 1939-1956 - Director of the Institute of Permafrost Science of the USSR Academy of Sciences .
On April 3, 1930, at a meeting of the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Academician V. A. Obruchev was elected the first director of the Geological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, which was then in Leningrad [17] . Approved in this position by the General Meeting of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Since February 23, 1933 he headed the Department of lithogenesis and geology of minerals. At the personal request of V. A. Obruchev, on October 20, 1933, the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences dismissed him from the post of director of the Geological Institute [18] and entrusted the temporary performance of these duties to Academician A. A. Borisyak .
In 1942-1946 - academician-secretary of the Department of Geological and Geographical Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences .
In 1946-1953 - Member of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences .
Since 1947 - Honorary President of the Geographical Society of the USSR .
He made a great contribution to the popularization of science. He conducted educational work among youth, maintaining contacts with schools and houses of pioneers. Known for his correspondence with the local history teacher N. M. Revyakin , the creator of the Khuzhir Museum of Local Lore on Lake Baikal .
He lived in Moscow on the Kuznetsk Bridge in the apartment building of Khomyakov [19] . Since 1948, he constantly lived in a country house near Zvenigorod [20] .
Vladimir Afanasevich Obruchev died on June 19, 1956 . He was buried in Moscow at the Novodevichy cemetery [21] .
