History

The label was founded in the Netherlands in 1980 and was originally called “Roadracer Records”. At first, the label's activity was to import albums of American metal bands into Europe. In 1986 , Roadrunner opened an American subsidiary in New York, and later in England , Germany , France , Japan and Australia . Early successes included the King Diamond albums (the first Roadrunner singer on the Billboard Top 200 ) and Annihilator albums. The label also managed the release of Metallica releases in the Scandinavian region. The end of the 1980s was marked by the release of two albums, which are now considered classics of their genre: Obituary - Slowly We Rot and Sepultura - Beneath the Remains .

In the 1990s, artists such as Life of Agony , Machine Head , Sepultura and Type O Negative appeared on the label. During the 90s, some Roadrunner performers managed to influence the mainstream (Sepultura and Type O Negative were the most notable). The Sepultura album of 1993 , Chaos AD , was the first among Roadrunner Records artists to manage to hit the Billboard Top 40 . Type O Negative became the first Roadrunner group to be on the air and the first to receive certification from the RIAA ; it was the status of the gold disc (later the album also received platinum status) for the 1993 album Bloody Kisses , which received certification in 1995 . In 1999 , Slipknot became the first Roadrunner performer to receive platinum disc status. Since 2001 , the Roadrunner albums began to spread Universal Music Group through The Island Def Jam Music Group . Currently, the transaction has expired.

In the late 90s, Mindless Self Indulgence signed a contract with Roadrunner Records, but the contract was terminated due to the label's reluctance to release their song "Panty Shot".

December 18, 2006 Warner Strategic Marketing signed an agreement to acquire a controlling stake (73.5%) of the parent company Roadrunner, Roadrunner Music Group BV . [1] The transaction entered into force on January 29, 2007 , after receiving approval from Germany. [2]

Recently, Roadrunner Records received the title of "Best Metal Label" from the Metal Hammer magazine at the Golden Gods Award [3] , an award that Roadrunner receives 3 years in a row.
