Wakkanai ( Jap. 稚 内 市 Wakkanai-si ) is a port in Hokkaido , the administrative center of Soya County , the northernmost city in Japan .

The area of the city is 760.89 km² [1] , the population is 37,001 people (June 30, 2014) [2] , the population density is 48.63 people / km².
The city is located on the shores of the Laperuz Strait of the Sea of Okhotsk , which separates Hokkaido from Sakhalin Island . The city was founded on April 1, 1949 .
The climate is humid, rainy and windy, with more than 1,100 mm of precipitation a year. In winter, precipitation is usually in the form of snow .
The cities of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk , Nevelsk and Korsakov are twinned with Vakkanaya. [3] The port is often visited by sailors from Russia .

Climate
Climate Vakkany moderate monsoon . Due to the influence of the warm Kuroshio current, winters are much milder here than in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk , located nearby, and also than in Terney , located at about the same latitude as Wakkanai. But still the winters here are very cold by the standards of Krasnodar or Simferopol , which are located at the same geographical latitude.
