Biography
The date and place of birth of Robert Wien is not precisely established. In all likelihood, he was born in 1873 in Breslau (today Wroclaw ) [1] , and not in 1881 in Dresden , as is often indicated. His father Karl Vine was a well-known Saxon court artist of Czech origin. Younger brother Conrad Vine became a theater actor and film director.
In 1894, in Berlin, Robert Wien began to study law, and a year later continued his studies in Vienna . In 1908 and 1909 he was the head of two small theaters. In 1913 he made his film debut as a screenwriter and director. Gained worldwide fame thanks to the expressionist film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari ” (Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, 1920). He staged Genoa (Genuine, 1921), Raskolnikov (Raskolnikow, 1923) according to Dostoevsky and Jesus the Nazareth, King of the Jews (1923) with Gregory Hmara in the same style.
In 1934, Robert Wien emigrated from Germany and settled in Paris after short stops in Budapest and London . An attempt to put together with Jean Cocteau a sound remake of the film “ Doctor Caligari's Study ” was unsuccessful.
Robert Vinet died July 17, 1938 in Paris and was buried in the Bagneux cemetery in the department of Hautes-de-Seine
