Biography
The illegitimate son of a wealthy doctor Abel Flamant and Francoise Pereton. Mother was married to Adolf Hans.
Before making an acting career in theater and cinema, Hans worked as an assistant lawyer. Since 1908, Abel Hans performed in the theater ( Paris , Brussels ). He wrote two tragedies . He made his film debut in 1909 as an actor in the film Moliere by Leon Perret . Wrote a book of poems "Finger on the keyboard." Then he enjoys writing scripts. The first picture, "Dam" (La Digue), shot in 1911 . During this period, Hans wrote the script and, using distorting lenses and mirrors to create the effect of hallucinations, he shot the short film "Dr. Tyub's Madness" 1915 about the delirious visions of the scientist. He also continued to make films and experiment with lighting, editing, and camera. After the failure of this film, he put on a dozen more paintings. Among them, the serial film "Barbarossa" gained popularity among viewers.
He was a partner of Max Linder in many films. In 1910 he wrote scripts for Louis Feyad , Albert Capellani , Camille de Marlon .
In 1914 he was mobilized in the army. Filmed propaganda films (Paddy's Heroism (1915), Stras and K (1915), Deadly Gas (1916)).
The most significant films by Hans made after 1917 include “Mother of the Sorrowful (Mater Dolorosa)”, “Tenth Symphony”, “I Blame”, “Wheel”.
In 1927 he staged Napoleon , where he himself played the role of Saint-Just. The film is conceived as a trilogy , but Hans does not find the funds for the next two parts. 1929 - the third part of the trilogy is staged by Lupu Peak : " Napoleon on St. Helena ." In 1936 it was dubbed, and in 1971 the second, revised edition was released. English historian Kevin Brownlow managed to recreate the most complete version, which made a splash in New York in 1981.
“Critics eagerly emphasized the ambivalence of Hans’s work, where grandeur and squalor, pomp and lyricism, pathos and primitive symbolism, imagination and technical ingenuity, which he often abuses,“ an abundance of innovations, along with miserable cliches and bad taste “…” (L. Mussinak)
The first laureate of the 1974 National Grand Prix in the field of cinema, Abel Gans won in 1980 the Cesar honorary prize.
After the release of the film “I Accuse”, Mussinak wrote about him that he must either be completely accepted or completely rejected.
