Character Description
Cohen was born in one of the barbarian tribes that roam the icy plains spread across the Pup from the Round Sea . When he was eleven years old, his father drove him out of the tribe and since then he has been living his mind. Throughout his long life, Cohen was a hero and was engaged in ordinary heroic deeds [3] , namely, searching for treasures, robbing the ruins of ancient temples, saving virgins from the hands of crazy priests, and generally destroying the plans of evil lords.
When we first meet Cohen in books, he is already quite old. Cohen is a short, very thin and bald old man. His exact age is not known to anyone. Cohen himself says he is between 90 and 95 years old. He has a gray beard to his knees, thin legs with varicose veins and a sinewy, muscular body covered with scars. During his adventures, Cohen lost one eye and now he covers the empty eye socket with a black blindfold. Around the same time, he lost all his teeth, but got a false jaw made of a troll tooth, which, as everyone knows, are diamonds. He rides a skinny and sinewy horse like himself, with a rubber circle attached to his saddle. A rubber circle saves him from hemorrhoids, but Cohen also suffers from lumbago, arthritis, radiculitis and indigestion.
Younger rivals often underestimate Cohen, naively believing that some old man there is unlikely to be a serious problem. However, pretty soon a simple truth opens before them - a barbarian hero who has lived to a very old age should really be very, very good at his job.
Like every barbarian, Cohen, looks quite straightforwardly at the world, he believes that usually people really mean what they are talking about. For example, if a captured prisoner claims that he would rather die than betray his master, then you should not bother with him, but you must quickly kill him. This approach led to the deaths of several guards and courtiers during the capture of the Agate Empire , who did not immediately realize their dangerous misconceptions. Nevertheless, during his long life he acquired a rather philosophical attitude towards life, supported by natural common sense. So, to the question of what, in his opinion, is the greatest life blessings, he replied: “hot water supply, good dentists and soft toilet paper”.
Cohen can read, though the texts are not too complicated, but he never learned to write, so instead of the signature he puts a cross. Nevertheless, he is considered to be the author of the guide “For 7 Days I Will Make Tibya Gyroi Barbarian!”. There is indisputable evidence that S. R. B. N. Dostable was directly involved in the publication of this work.
In The Interesting Times , Cohen finally decides to retire. To ensure a calm old age, he united a group of his comrades, the same elderly barbarian heroes, into the Silver Horde and captured the throne of the Agate Empire . (A possible parody of Conan the Barbarian , who became king of Aquilon, and the Golden Horde of Genghis Khan and his conquest of the Celestial Empire - China). Having become emperor, Cohen ruled quite successfully for some time, but a carefree life and the approaching end of life began to get on his nerves. Like a real hero, Cohen could not put up with the fact that his days were numbered and decided to finally arrange a feat that no one could neither repeat nor surpass. Together with the Silver Horde, he planned to return to the gods of Dunmanifestin what was stolen from them by the very first thief in the history of the Disc - fire. Of course, the return of fire conceived by him was to be accompanied by the roar and destruction of the dwelling of the gods, and along with the world itself, but that was the whole appeal of their plan - to leave, so with music, someone should answer for the heroes being allowed to age and die.
But the bard accompanying the Horde in their last adventure, together with Rinswind and Morkou who had fallen from the moon, explained to Cohen that if the world died, there would be no one to remember their exploits and no one to listen to songs composed in their honor. Therefore, Cohen at the last minute abandons his plan.
Heroes jump into the abyss, along with a barrel of gunpowder, which they prepared as a gift to the gods. It is hard to say what happened to them later. Their bodies were never found, and the Valkyries , who came after them to take them to Valhalla , complained that a gang of old men had stolen their horses from them. Since then, nothing has been heard of Cohen. But who knows…
Little is known about Cohen's family life. For some time, he connected his life with Betan, a young girl saved by him from druids. This continued, however, not too long. It is known that Cohen has children - the book “ The Last Hero ” says that he has about a dozen of them. In the book “ Staff and Hat ”, one of the main characters is his daughter Canina.
