Duct (story)

The Reach is a story by American writer Stephen King , first published in Yankee in 1981 under the title Do the Dead Sing? (literally, "Do the dead sing?"). In 1985, the story was included in the author’s collection Skeleton Team ( Skeleton Crew ).

Story

The action takes place in the United States , the story tells of Stella Flanders ( Eng. Stella Flanders ) - the oldest woman living on Goat Island ( Eng. Goat Island ), along with her son Alden ( Eng. Alden ). During her long life, Stella never left her island. At the end of her life, dying of cancer, she increasingly sees the ghost of her late husband, who offers her a walk on the mainland. In this unusually cold winter, the Protoka (part of the river between the island and the mainland) froze, for the first time since 1938 , so that you could walk on it. And then one fine day, when Alden was not at home, Stella decides to fulfill her husband’s request and goes on ice to the mainland. The snowstorm and darkness soon blind her, and with the wind she rips off her cap from the head. But suddenly her dead husband appears nearby and gives her his hat. Other deceased inhabitants of the island appear with him and help move on. Soon, Stella joins the dead and goes into the afterlife. Later, her frozen body is found on the mainland, near the village of Raccoon Head . And then Alden for a long time wonders how the old hat of his long dead father was on Stella’s head.
