| R s | Position No. 244 in the list 500 of the greatest albums of all time according to the magazine Rolling Stone |
Unlike The Slim Shady LP , here Eminem talks about his sudden rise to fame, about disputes around the lyrics of his songs, and also discusses his relationship with his wife Kim and his mother. The album received high marks from music critics who praised Marshall's lyrical abilities and the emotional depth of the album. But at the same time, The Marshall Mathers LP received a lot of controversy, in particular because of the lyrics of the Marshall accused of homophobia and called them cruel and misogynistic. However, the album made it to the list of the 500 greatest albums according to Rolling Stone and is considered the best-selling album of 2000 , selling 1.78 million copies in its first week. In 2011, the album received the “diamond” status of RIAA .
In 2013, Eminem released a kind of sequel to the album - The Marshall Mathers LP 2 .
Background
In 1997, the then emerging rapper Eminem invented his alter ego called Slim Shady ( born Slim Shady ), which was first introduced on the mini-album The Slim Shady EP , released in the same year [1] . After Eminem finished second in Rap Olympics 97, he was noticed by Interscope Records and personally by Jimmy Iowin and Dr. Dre , who listened to The Slim Shady EP [1] . Dr. Dre, admiring the work of a newbie, decided to record a full-fledged version of The Slim Shady EP with Eminem. This is how The Slim Shady LP appeared , which was released on February 23, 1999 [1] . The album received high marks from music critics [2] [3] [4] [5] and was a commercial success, debuting in second place on the Billboard 200 chart with 283 thousand copies in its first week [6] . At the 2000 Grammy Awards, the album won two awards: “ Best Rap Album ” and “ Best Solo Rap Performance ” [7] .
The Slim Shady LP turned Eminem into a real celebrity. The rapper, who had struggled to live in Detroit before the release of the album and provide for his daughter Haley Jade Scott, got married in June 1999 to his girlfriend Kimberly Ann Scott, Haley's mother, despite the fact that in the song '97 Bonnie & Clyde contains references to the murder of his wife. Eminem also became a very controversial figure because of The Slim Shady LP lyrics. He was called a woman hater and a nihilist , and Billboard editor-in-chief Timothy White accused Eminem of “making money by exploiting the misery of the world” [1] .
Record
The Marshall Mathers LP was recorded in the “creative drinking party”, which often included 20-hour studio sessions. Eminem did not want to talk to anyone about recording the album in order to concentrate fully on work [8] . Most of the album was written spontaneously. Eminem noted that most of his favorite material on the album evolved from head to studio: “Marshall Mathers” was coined when Jeff Bass played the guitar carelessly, the basis for “Criminal” was the piano , which Eminem overheard in another studio [ 8] . “Kill You” was recorded when Eminem heard the melody playing the drone of Dr. Dre, and showed interest in using it for songs [8] . Then Marshall wrote lyrics for the song at home, met Dr. Dre and they recorded the song together [9] .
“Kim” was the first Eminem song recorded for this album. Eminem recorded this song around the time when he did not communicate with his wife, Kim, and after watching a romantic movie. Initially, the song was about love, but after taking ecstasy Eminem completely changed the text [10] . Marshall wanted to make a short horror story in the form of a song. The song " Stan " was produced by The 45 King. Eminem’s manager, Paul Rosenberg , sent the rapper a record of the producer’s beats, and the second track was a sample of the song “ Thank You ” by the English singer Dido . Eminem felt that he and The 45 King described an obsessive fan who became the inspiration for the song.
About the album
Subject
Eminem called the album his own name, which speaks of a more serious and personal mood, in contrast to his previous album, The Slim Shady LP , in which Marshall spoke on behalf of the fictional character Slim Shady. Basically, in The Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem talks about his journey to fame, and also responds to criticism from the previous album. As in The Slim Shady LP , there are references to the occult. Other topics on the album are Eminem’s relationship with his family, in particular his wife and mother.
Pirate copies
The first bootleggs of The Marshall Mathers LP appeared in early 2000. They had 14 tracks; “Remember Me”, “Marshall Mathers”, “I'm Back” and “Ken Kaniff” were missing. At the end of the "Criminal" was hidden diss on Everlast (Everlast) "Quitter". It differed from other versions of Dis in that the freestyle to the music from Tupac Shakur 's song “ Hit 'Em Up ” was cut out.
Criticism and Contradictions
The first week the album was sold in the amount of 1,760,049 copies (which was an absolute record for the rap album), surpassing the result that Snoop Dogg achieved in 1993 with his debut album Doggystyle , and achieving a result similar to the Britney Spears record as the fastest sold solo artist [11] . The Marshall Mathers LP is still Eminem’s most successful album in terms of sales, by the end of the year 7.9 million copies were sold - the highest result in 2000 [12] . To date, more than 10 million copies have been sold in the United States [13] .
The protests caused by the brutal and homophobic lyrics of the album reached the limit when the album was nominated for four Grammys in 2001, including the nomination for the Album of the Year (for the first time for a hardcore rap album in general). At the ceremony, Eminem performed “Stan” in a duet with gay singer Elton John , who played the piano and sang the chorus instead of Dido. All this was done to prove that Eminem was not homophobic and to calm GLAAD , but this did not help, and the association even protested against Elton’s decision to speak with Eminem. Despite all the hype, The Marshall Mathers LP won the nomination in the category “Album of the Year”, but, to everyone's surprise, did not win the award, losing to the Steely Dan group with their first album for many years, Two Against Nature .
Despite protests and boycotts by GLAAD and other controversies, the album met with enthusiastic criticism. Allmusic called the album almost perfect, appreciating the musical component. [14] New Musical Express gave the album the highest rating with the words “Stunning attack of lyrical genius” [15] . Entertainment Weekly appreciated the album for its diversity and for its “defenselessness and simultaneous resistance to criticism, hypocrisy and honesty, the inability to listen to and the simultaneous inability to deny its quality” and saying that this is “the first great pop record of the 21st century” [16] .
In 2002, French jazz pianist Jacques Lucier sued Eminem, demanding 10 million for Eminem allegedly stole a beat for his song “Kill You” from Lucier’s song “Pulsion” [17] . He also demanded that all sales of the album be suspended, and the remaining copies be destroyed. However, the court did not satisfy his claims.
Censorship
Similarly to The Slim Shady LP , at the beginning of the album there was a skit “Public Service Announcement 2000”, in which there is a warning about harsh lyrics and album themes (though this warning itself also abounds with profanity and insults to especially “sensitive” listeners and critics) .
Some phrases were cut even from the “Dirty” (non-censored) version of the album, such as “I take seven [kids] from [Columbine], stand 'em all in line” from the song “I'm Back”, “[your attorney Fred Gibson's a] faggot! ” from“ Marshall Mathers ”and “ there's a [four] year old little [boy] laying dead with a slit throat ” from“ Kim ”. The last 2 lines can be heard in the original version on the rare collection The Shady Shizzle Collection .
The clean version of the album leaves words like “ass”, “shit”, “bitch”, “goddamn” and “nigga”. Mostly all the lines were cut, in which there are insults and violence against the police, prostitutes, women, gays and Columbine High School . On most copies of the clean version of the album, the 25-second Public Service Announcment 2000 has been reduced to 2 seconds of silence, but on other clean versions it is left. The song “Kim” is also completely cut out, as Eminem reads in it about how he kills his wife. The track was replaced by a song in the style of the animated series " South Park " about the dangers of drugs "The Kids". The song “Bitch Please II” in both clean and “Dirty” versions is designated as “B **** Please II”. In this song, cut out the phrase "Bang-Bang" in a clean version that Snoop Dogg reads. In the song “Marshall Mathers”, in addition to the cut out “your attorney Fred Gibson's a”, the entire line “[your attorney Fred Gibson's a faggot!]” Is cut out. In the song “I'm Back”, the lines “Add an AK-47, a revolver, a nine A mack 11 and an all assault a problem of mine” are cut from a clean version. “Kill You” in the clean version is designated as “**** You”. The song “Drug Ballad” is designated in the pure version as simply “Ballad”. “Criminal” is 1-2 minutes shorter than in the uncensored version. Amityville is a few seconds shorter than the uncensored version.
Insane Clown Posse Diss
In response to the diss on Eminem recorded by Detroit rap group Insane Clown Posse "Eminem's Mom", Marshall recorded a skit "Ken Kaniff" in which members of Insane Clown Posse Shaggy 2 Dope and Violent J parodied to Ken Caniff and at that moment when he asks for his name, they say "Eminem."
In the song “Marshall Mathers,” Eminem states the following “I was put here to put fear in faggots who spray Faygo Root Beer and call themselves„ clowns “cause they look queer. Fagot 2, Gotting, Detroit, I’m killing you and me, I’m not wrestling, I’ll be killing you fucking faggots the fuck out. ” (“I came to intimidate those fagots who splash the Faygo Root Beer and call themselves clowns because they expose themselves. Fagot 2 Dope and Silent Gay, you talk about Detroit, although you yourself live twenty miles from it (fucking punks) and I'm not a wrestler, I, fucking fagots, hang you "). (ICP also participated in wrestling and there is a hint that wrestling is a staged struggle where everything is not real, and Eminem will do it with them in reality)
Singles
All three singles were shot clips.
The Real Slim Shady
The Way I Am
" The Way I Am " was the second single. The song is darker, more aggressive and more serious than the main single from the album The Real Slim Shady .
It was the first beat that Eminem made; he used ominous bass, keyboards and bell tones. In the song, Eminem splashes his anger at putting too much pressure on him - fans asking for an autograph from Marshall, even when he's in the closet, and on label managers who demand to make a successful hit like My Name Is . He also expresses his opinion about the shooting at the Columbine school .
In the chorus, Eminem is trying to figure out for himself what he has become. The previous album, The Slim Shady LP , was less serious and “cartoony”, and in it Eminem read on behalf of Slim Shady, while critics mistakenly considered that Eminem, Marshall Mathers and Slim Shady are the same person. Like many artists who created an alter ego (such as ( David Bowie , Alice Cooper ), Eminem doubts who he has become and who he will be.
Chorus uses rhymes similar to those made by rapper Rakim in the song “As The Rhyme Goes On” from his debut album with DJ Eric B.
- I'm r
- If I wasn't, then why would I say I am?
Stan
The song " Stan " became the third single from The Marshall Mathers LP . She won first place in the charts of the United Kingdom and Australia . This song was best accepted by critics, having received the title 'Milestone in Culture'. [18]
“Stan” is a story about an obsessed Eminem fan named Stan, who constantly sends him letters but receives no response. Finally disappointed in his idol, Stan falls by car from the bridge, with his pregnant girlfriend in the trunk. The first three verses are read on behalf of Stan, the first two verses are letters, and the third verse Stan writes to a cassette while riding in a car. He was going to send her to Eminem, but being drunk behind the wheel, he could not cope with the controls and fell into the river. The song uses a lot of sound effects: the sounds of rain and thunder, writing on pencil paper, and the sounds of Stan's car in the third couplet. When the car falls from the bridge, we hear the creak of tires, the crash of the car that broke the fence, splashes of water, which is very similar to the songs “ Dead Man's Curve ” and “ Leader of the Pack ”. In the fourth verse, Eminem writes a letter to Stan, in which he advises him not to be so keen on music and pay more attention to his pregnant girlfriend. As an argument, he cites the story he heard in the news about how a young man, along with his pregnant girlfriend, died when he fell from a bridge by car, but at the last moment he realizes that it was Stan.
The song is also a response to critics who say that Eminem reads too much about violence and drugs. But Stan makes it clear that Eminem does not want and does not expect his texts to be taken seriously: “what's this shit you said about you like to cut your wrists too? I say that shit just clownin dogg, c'mon - how fucked up is you? "(" What kind of crap did you carry about how you like to cut your veins? I say this crap just fooling around, dude, okay you, what are you , really sick? ") A similar topic will continue to occur in the works of Eminem.
Beat made The 45 King and took the first lines of Dido 's song “Thank You” , using them as a refrain.
The song took 3rd place in the list of the best rap songs according to Q magazine [19] , and 10th in the same list of Top40-Charts.com. [20] ; Rolling Stone magazine in its list of 500 greatest songs of all time put it in 290th place, Acclaimedmusic.net. [21] put her on 45th place in the list of “100 Greatest Rap Songs”, as well as on 222nd place on the list of 500 Best Songs of All Time.
Radio Singles
“ Bitch Please II ” and “ Drug Ballad ” were released as radio singles, all hit the charts like the single “Kill You”.
