History

The University of Vienna was founded on March 12, 1365 by Duke Rudolph IV , as well as his brothers Albrecht III and Leopold III . The university got its name Alma Mater Rudolphina thanks to its founder. After Charles University in Prague and Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Vienna University is the third oldest institution of higher education in Central Europe , as well as the oldest university in the German-speaking space.

For the full functioning of the university, however, it took about another twenty years. For the full work of the university, the Duke Albrecht III had to lure the faculty from the Sorbonne to Vienna , and also enlist the support of the Catholic Church in opening the theological faculty. As a result, in 1385 the first university building was opened.

Until the end of the Middle Ages, the university was constantly developing and by 1450 there were about 6,000 students. The siege of Vienna by the Turks, however, led several decades later to the almost complete collapse of the university: in some years of the 16th century, only about 30 students studied there. The reform of the university took place only under Maria Theresa and Joseph II in 1749 .

In 1897 , women were first allowed to study at the university, initially only at the Faculty of Philosophy. The remaining faculties opened their doors to students a few years later: in 1900 at the medical faculty, in 1919 at the law faculty, in 1923 at the Protestant-theological faculty and, finally, in 1946 at the Catholic-theological faculty. In 1905 , Elise Richter became the first woman in university history to receive a Ph.D.

Location

In the Middle Ages, the university was located in the so-called Stubenviertel ( German Stubenviertel ) of the first inner district of Vienna . The modern main building of the University of Vienna was built in 1877 - 1884 according to the design of the architect Heinrich von Ferstel on Ringstrasse .

At present, the administration building, the majority of deans, the main university library, as well as some institutes are located in the main building. The rest of the institutes and departments are dispersed at more than 60 points in Vienna . Not far from the main university building, there is a campus located in the building of the former Vienna City Hospital.
