Biography

Born in a landlord family [2] . He spent his childhood in the family estate in the village of Sekretka of the Serdobsky district of the Saratov province [3] . He studied at the School of Law in St. Petersburg ( 1870 - 1875 ; he did not graduate from the course). He returned to the estate of Lipiagi inherited from his mother and grandmother [4] , where he managed the farm with his brother Sergey [5] . Not satisfied with economic activities, he leased the land, considering literary work and enlightenment of the people as his mission [5] .

In the early 1890s, he opened his own folk school, where he spent 3 years as a teacher [5] [6] . In 1895 he was elected as a public council of the Penza district , in 1897 he was appointed a member of the district council , where he was responsible for public education, and later - a member of the district council and the diocesan school council. In the years 1898-1904 he was a member of the provincial assembly and a member of the provincial administration, where he also was in charge of public education; approved by a member of the provincial college committee, the Penza district and provincial teachers' council, the school commission. In addition, he was secretary of the Agricultural Society of Southeastern Russia, was a member of the provincial statistical committee, the Penza scientific archive commission, the provincial statistical committee, the board of the library to them. M. Yu. Lermontov [5] [6] ; he was a member of Pushkin Society, a committee of trusteeship on popular sobriety, a dramatic group of folk theater [5] . He also engaged in charity work: he presented a grand piano to a hostel for girls - children of national teachers of the province, built an ambulance station and school in Lipyagi for a loan, donated cash (for example, to open a library in the village of Olenevka, Penza district). He participated in the 50th anniversary of the death of VG Belinsky (1898), contributing to the publication of the collection “In Memory of VG Belinsky” [5] .

In the Zemstvo Assembly insisted on a decent remuneration of teachers, organized pedagogical courses, was a trustee of several schools. Contributed to the creation of a network of libraries in the province (52 Zemsky libraries), the opening of the library named after M. Lermontov in Tarkhany , a library in the village of Poim ; organized a book warehouse at the district council and was engaged in the acquisition of libraries [5] .

Represented the Penza province at the Russian Zemsky congresses (1903-1905) and at the 1st All-Russian Congress on public education [5] .

At the end of 1904, at the provincial assembly, he refused to run for provincial government due to the lack of adequate funding for public education [5] .

In the 1890-1900s, he often visited St. Petersburg and Moscow , where he met with writers and editors of magazines. His social circle included D. S. Merezhkovsky , A. N. Pleshcheyev , K. S. Brantsevich, P. V. Zasodimsky , S. Ya. Nadson , D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak , V. M. Lavrov , V A. Goltsev , V. S. Solovyov , artist N. A. Yaroshenko and others [5] . In the early 1890s, in St. Petersburg, he met with I. A. Bunin and A. P. Chekhov , consisted with them in correspondence [7] , visited the Chekhovs in Melikhovo and the Crimea [5] [6] [2] [8 ] ] .

In 1905-1906 he edited the newspaper Perestroy in Penza (together with NF Yezersky ) [5] [6] [2] .

In 1911 he returned to zemstvo activities: he was elected as a public member of the Penza district assembly (1911–1916), was a member of the county medical and teaching councils, and also a member of the provincial and county committees of national sobriety; in 1913, he was also elected an honorary magistrate [5] . During the First World War, he worked as a representative of the Red Cross of the All-Russian Zemstvo Union [5] .

After the estate in Lipyagi was devastated in 1917, V. N. Ladyzhensky went to Moscow, where he headed the Society for Education. In 1919 he emigrated to France [5] .

He lived in Bordeaux, then near Paris - in Medon, Chaville (Gilles), in the last years of his life - in the south of France. He worked at the poultry house, was engaged in teaching activities, was a tutor of a hostel of Russian boys. In 1926 he participated in the publication of the newspaper "Russian boy". He was a member of the Union of Russian Writers and Journalists, the Society of Russian Students for the Study of Slavic Culture [5] .

He was buried at the Russian Cemetery Kokad in Nice [9] .

Family

Father - Nikolai Nikolayevich Ladyzhensky (November 14, 1823 - February 24, 1870), second lieutenant; the son of Nikolai Fedorovich (? - until 1835), a retired staff captain (1804) and a titular adviser, and Stepanida Ignatievna [10] .

Mother - Lyubov Leontyevna (born Hilinskaya).

The brothers - Sergey (5.8.1856—?), Alexander (14.3.1858—17.10.1873), Fedor (1868—?) [5] .

Creativity

The first stories for children published in 1886 in the journal “ Children's Reading ” by V. P. Ostrogorsky [5] [6] . Later he published stories and poems (at the insistence of A.N. Pleshcheyev ) in the magazines " Russian Thought ", " European Herald ", " God 's World ", "Modern World", " Russian Wealth ", " Voice of the Past ", " Northern Herald " and others. [5] The first book of stories and fairy tales (“On arable land”) was published in 1893, the first book of poems - in 1896 [5] [2] .

The prose of V. N. Ladyzhensky is distinguished by a light tone, an artistic preaching of kindness and mercy. Sympathy for the underprivileged, protection of humanity is also characteristic of his lyric poetry, in which he found affinity with the poetry of A. Apukhtin and S. Nadson [8] .

During the period of activity in the Zemstvo Assembly, he wrote a number of textbooks (“The History of Russian Literature for Schools and the People”; “KD Ushinsky and Native Word” in collaboration with PF Oryolkin, 1901; “Help of a public teacher to non-formal education , 1902) and books in the series Reading for Schools and the People (On Books and Writings, 1899–1901; What Is a Zemstvo, 1902) [5] .

Translated from French and published " Marseillaise " ("Forward, sons of the native land ...") (1906) [5] [6] [2] .

In the 1910s, he wrote a number of essays about writers close to him, public figures and artists (published in the journal “Vestnik Evropy” in 1917 entitled “Days and Meetings”): V.P. Ostrogorsky, P.V. Zasodimsky, D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak, V. A. Goltsev, V. M. Lavrov, S. Ya. Yelpatyevsky , N. F. Annensky , as well as about Penzens - P. F. Orelkin (inspector of public schools), V. D. Andrievsky, artists KA Savitsky and A. F. Afanasyev [5] .

Being in emigration, he published stories from the life of emigrants, memories of Leskov, Plescheev, Naidenov, Lavrov.
