Story

Rafe and Danny are friends from Tennessee since childhood, they grew up together and were like brothers to each other. Since childhood, both are addicted to aviation and become pilots of the US Air Corps. Rafe has an affair with nurse Evelyn. However, lovers are separated. Rafe joins the Eagle Squadron » KVVS Britain and leaves for England to beat off German raids in the battle for Britain , while Danny and Evelyn are transferred to serve at the Pearl Harbor base in the Hawaiian Islands . There are news that Rafe died in battle. Evelyn and Danny find peace in each other and become very close. Suddenly, Rafe arrives at Pearl Harbor. It turned out that he survived - he managed to get out of the sunken plane and was rescued by French fishermen. The resistance sent him home.

Rafe and Danny decide to sort things out. The clash turns into a fight, after which they together have to flee from the arrived police and spend the night in a car on the road. In the parallel line of the plot, the Japanese plan to strike at Pearl Harbor, gather intelligence, develop an attack plan, and deliver their surprise attack , catching American sailors by surprise. Evelyn and her friends are helping the mobs of the wounded in the hospital, and Rafe and Denny raise their fighters from the attacked airfield and shoot down several Japanese airplanes. The attack on Pearl Harbor and the enormous losses suffered as a result of this blow are shocking to the Americans. To achieve a psychological victory, the US command is organizing a raid to bomb Tokyo , Rafe and Danny are volunteering to join Doolittle pilots.

Lightweight bombers are taking off from aircraft carriers, dropping bombs, to which Japanese medals are attached, to Tokyo and flying farther to sit on the territory of China, unoccupied by the Japanese, because they do not have enough fuel to return to American bases. Danny and Rafe’s planes land on the border, where they are captured. Danny sacrifices himself to save Rafe. After these events, Rafe and Evelyn raise Evelyn's child from Danny.

Facts

  • Both of the main characters of the film had real prototypes - lieutenants of 47 squadrons of the 15th fighter group of the USAF George S. Welsh and Kenneth M. Taylor [3] [4] . In the film, the events of their lives were severely distorted. Taylor himself was very negative about it [5] .
  • The film shows a large number of aviation and marine equipment. The roles of most warships of the 40s were played by modern US Navy ships [6] .
  • The true authentic face of the characters in the film is Doris Miller, the messenger from the battleship West Virginia.
  • The shooting took five months from April 10 to September 15, 2000.
  • The film was used several real aircraft of the Second World War, preserved in the flying state [6] .
  • Especially for the film in Russia, two Mitsubishi A6M Zero aircraft were built according to preserved drawings at the Orenburg enterprise of PO PO Strela [7] . Also, three genuine Japanese Mitsubishi Zero fighters were used - one located in the “Museum of Aircraft Glory” in Chino, California, the second in the “Museum of Flights” in Santa Monica, California, and the third belonging to the public organization Memorial Air Force Based in texas.
  • In reality, none of the American planes that bombed Japan on April 18, 1942 during the Dullitl raid reached China. The only surviving machine under the command of Captain Edward Yorke sat on the Soviet Far Eastern airfield Unashi.
