I know very well what is known to many, but not all, as once from this krapinsky district, according to the estimates of Peter Koditsilius and many others, in 278, a very noble nobleman Cech left with his brothers Lech and Russ, as well as with all his friends and family due to the fact that they could no longer endure the great attacks and oppressions that the Romans did to them, and especially the head of the Roman troops Aurelius, who guarded Illyria with his armed hand and so oppressed his family that Cech and his own rebelled against him brought him out of the living . The content of this legend is fully consistent with the Roman chronicles, which narrate about the uprising of Marcus Aurelius Cara in Norica and Rethia in 282 , as a result of which the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius Prob was killed by the rebels and the power passed to Cara [1] [2] [3] .
During the reign of the Habsburgs, Krapina and the whole of Zagorje were popular with the Austrian and Croatian aristocracy as a summer vacation destination due to the picturesque landscapes and proximity to Zagreb and Varazdin.
In 1809, an outstanding Croatian enlightener, linguist, creator of the Croatian alphabet Ludevit Gai, was born in Krapin.
World fame came to the city in 1899 , when in the surrounding caves, the Croatian paleontologist Dragutin Goryanovic-Kramberger found more than 800 Neanderthal bones . The study of fossil remains allowed paleontologists to identify a subspecies of Neanderthals named after the find of Homo krapiniensis (the name no longer applies).
