Biography
Born in Greenville, South Carolina . His biological father, Noah Louis Robinson, a former professional boxer and well-known figure in the black community, was married to another woman at the time of his birth and did not take part in raising his son. Two years after the birth of Jesse, his mother married Charles Henry Jackson , who adopted Jesse 14 years later.
Jackson attended the Chicago Theological Seminary, but left it in 1966 to concentrate fully on human rights activities. He was ordained a Baptist priest in 1968 , although he did not have a completed theological education.
Human rights activities
In 1965, he joined the Selma to Montgomery marches , organized by Martin Luther King and other civil rights leaders in Alabama . After that, he worked together with Martin Luther King until the tragic death of the latter.
In 1984, Jackson organized the left-liberal coalition Rainbow , which in 1996 merged with Operation Promotion ( PUSH ). The Rainbow Coalition was called to bring together social movements and oppressed groups affected by the policies of the Reagan Republican administration (including racial minorities, labor unions, unemployed, working mothers, small farmers, gays and lesbians).
Jackson took an active part in international activities. In 1983, Jesse flew to Syria to help release the US Navy pilot , Lieutenant Robert Goodman , shot down over Lebanon. After negotiations with the Syrian president, the lieutenant was released. In June 1984, at the invitation of Fidel, Castro visited Cuba, where he secured the release of 24 US citizens.
Subsequently, he continued active visits to various countries in conflict or having tense relations with Washington. In August 2005, he visited Venezuela to meet with President Hugo Chavez , whom television preacher Pat Robertson had publicly called for the killing shortly before; Jackson confirmed that he did not find any evidence that Venezuela could pose a threat to the United States.
Presidential Campaigns
Twice Jesse Jackson participated in presidential campaigns. In 1984, he became the second African American in history (after Shirley Chisholm ) to run for the presidency nationwide from the Democratic Party . He managed to take third place after Senator Gary Hart ( Eng. Gary Hart ) and former Vice President Walter Mondale ( Eng. Walter Mondale ).
In 1988, he again stands for primaries from the Democratic Party. He actually doubled his previous result by the number of votes (6.9 million in 1988 against 3.5 million votes in 1984), winning in 14 states and losing only to Michael Dukakis . Both times, Jackson spoke of a progressive program that included Keynesian economic policies as opposed to reaganomics (including maintaining social benefits instead of cutting taxes on the rich), introducing universal free health care, isolating the apartheid regime in South Africa, ending the arms race and cutting defense spending by at least 15 %.
Present
Jackson was later convicted of extramarital affairs with his assistant Karin Stanford ( born Karin Stanford ). She made Jackson confess to the paternity of her child. He was involved in several other scandals.
In July 2008, he was forced to apologize for expressing himself to US presidential candidate Barack Obama . Thinking it was just a phone call, Rev. Jesse Jackson said: "Obama is arrogant towards blacks." However, it turned out that the words were broadcast on Fox News. The next day, he apologized for his words, saying that the remark sounded sharper than he wanted to say. At the same time, supporters of the Republican Party believe that this incident is nothing more than a PR move to raise Obama’s prestige among the “white” population of the United States, since Jackson is professional enough in television to know when the microphone is turned on and when it’s on broadcast.
