Story

Immediately after launch, space pirates attack the spaceship. Leela shoots back. As luck would have it, the eternal parasite Bender is jumping in a torpedo tube. Bender is in outer space completely alone. Leela is trying to catch up with the robot, but this is impossible: at the time of the shot, the Interplanetary Express was moving at maximum speed, "accordingly, the speed of the" shot "by the direct course of Bender will always be higher than the speed of the ship."

Unhappy Bender thinks, how can he spend the rest of eternity in a cosmic void. He crosses a cluster of asteroids and discovers that a small folk of shrimpkins , tiny humanoids with their civilization, have settled on his chest. They settled on a metal surface and began to revere Bender as God. Bender chooses a prophet, Shrimpkin Malachi, and lowers his first commandment: "GOD NEEDS A DRINK."

Meanwhile, the crew of the Interplanetary Express returned to New York and is trying to find his iron friend with a sniffoscope , but they fail.

The Shrimpkins meanwhile built a distillation plant to please their God, but this led to problems: many small residents were killed or crippled during the construction, and smoke from the plant caused environmental problems. In addition, alcohol production spawned organized gang crime . Having penetrated the problems of his wards, Bender drops a stingy tear, which, having fallen on the city, brings him even more devastating destruction. The son of Malachi almost drowns in the water stream, but Bender saves him. This leads to the fact that everyone begins to pray for their own good: some about wealth, some about the sun ... Bender, trying to please everyone, only exacerbates the situation.

Meanwhile, on Earth, Fry is trying to find a robot with the help of the Shuba monks and their radio telescope in the Himalayan mountains .

And civilization on Bender is growing. There is a revolt of those who live on his back, "for from there God does not hear their prayers." Malachi asks the robot to intervene, knowing that they are preparing for war, but Bender refuses: he already realized that everything he did leads to disastrous results. The war begins, and both groups destroy each other in the Holy Atomic War (unbelievers from the back of Bender discovered his nuclear power source).

Fry and Leela equip an expedition to the Himalayas.

Bender mourns the disappearance of the shrimpkins and suddenly, through tears, discovers that the Galaxy signals him with a binary code. He answers her. In a conversation, the robot begins to realize that it is talking with some huge Galactic computer, which, perhaps, is God .

Fry and Leela get to the monastery, but the monks refuse to give them a telescope. Leela, using the fact that the monks preach a policy of non-violence, locks them in the laundry room and takes possession of the appliance.

Bender and the Galaxy exchange arguments about how it feels to be God, and agree that this is not easy. The galaxy teaches that God should neither do too much for people nor do nothing, but only need to intervene a little. The galaxy cannot bring Bender back to Earth, because it simply does not know where this planet is. The robot resigns itself to the fact that it will spend the remaining eternity in conversations with the Galaxy.

Fry for three days unsuccessfully searches for Bender. Desperate, he throws the telescope, turning it directly to the Galaxy, and, leaving, says: "I want Bender to return." The galaxy receives this message and throws the robot in the direction of the signal. Bender slaps to the ground right in front of Fry and Lila, leaving the monastery. Bender uses the knowledge gained from the Galaxy to explain to Fry that locked monks must be released.

The galaxy is happy.

Cultural References

  • The phenomenon described in this series is also known as “ sensory deprivation .”
  • Tagline at the beginning of the episode calls for "disconnecting mobile phones and tricorders." Tricorders are scanning devices from Star Trek .
  • The observatory in the monastery is high in the mountains - a reference to the story "Nine Billion Names of God" by the American science fiction writer Arthur Clark .
  • “Optical Flight Through the Universe” at the end of the episode - a reference to the end of the film “Men in Black” .
  • In the episode Treehouse of Horror VII of the animated series " The Simpsons, " Lisa also became the ruler of the "Little People." A similar theme is present in the story of the American science fiction writer Theodore Sturgeon "Micro-Cosmic God" and in the series "Twilight Zone" (episode "Little People"). Also, the episode echoes the story of Stanislav Lem “The Seventh Sally” (also the “essence of God” in this episode is similar to the “essence” in his script for “The Journey of Professor Tarantoga”), the story of Alan Dean Foster “The Gift of a Worthless Man,” the film “ People in black 2 "(aliens in the storage room) and the cartoon" Toy Story "(three-eyed aliens). A similar plot is reproduced in the episode " It Was In The Simpsons" of the animated series " South Park " - and in this series, the case also ends with the mutual destruction of two warring factions of a small nation in a nuclear war.
  • Billy West said that "the voice of the God of the Galaxy was taken from the series " Beyond the Possible . "
  • Malachi - the real name of the biblical prophet, is translated as "God's helper."
  • Bender's journey through space passes to the sounds of the compositions “ So Said Zarathustra ” by Richard Strauss and “ On the Beautiful Blue Danube ” by Johann Strauss . This, and the whole musical theme of the episode, is a reference to the film " 2001: Space Odyssey ."
  • Bender plays his Polonaise Do Minor Chopin on his piano .
  • The symbols (with the exception of the image of Bender scaring people), which (also from idleness) are carved by Bender, are a parody of the famous message to extraterrestrial civilizations engraved on an aluminum plate inside the Pioneer 10 spacecraft. This device was launched in 1972, on June 13, 1983, the device was the first to cross the orbit of the most distant planet of the solar system - Neptune, and communication with it was lost in 2003. The device is oriented towards Aldebaran , and if nothing happens to it, it will reach the star in about 2 million years.
  • In the photo that Fry sees in Robot Apartments, Bender depicts Napoleon .
