Captain Hook in Books
The book by Barry Hook describes this:
Instead of his right hand, he has an iron hook, with which he is currently chasing his gang. He treats his people cruelly and inhumanly. And they are afraid of him and obey. The captain’s skin is deathly pale, black hair curled into curls, falls on his shoulders, his eyes are not forget-me-not. All this together makes a terrifying impression. Yes, I must also add that he is always stunningly polite, even with his sacrifice, which he will send to the next world in an instant. In his mouth he holds a special device of his own invention, with which he can smoke two cigars at the same time. (per. I. Tomakova)
Original textHe lay at his ease in a rough chariot drawn and propelled by his men, and instead of a right hand he had the iron hook with which ever and anon he encouraged them to increase their pace. As dogs this terrible man treated and addressed them, and as dogs they obeyed him. In person he was cadaverous and blackavized, and his hair was dressed in long curls, which at a little distance looked like black candles, and gave a singularly threatening expression to his handsome countenance. His eyes were of the blue of the forget-me-not, and of a profound melancholy, save when he was plunging his hook into you, at which time two red spots appeared in them and lit them up horribly. In manner, something of the grand seigneur still clung to him, so that he even ripped you up with an air, and I have been told that he was a RACONTEUR of repute. He was never more sinister than when he was most polite, which is probably the truest test of breeding; and the elegance of his diction, even when he was swearing, no less than the distinction of his demeanour, showed him one of a different cast from his crew. A man of indomitable courage, it was said that the only thing he shied at was the sight of his own blood, which was thick and of an unusual color. In dress he somewhat aped the attire associated with the name of Charles II, having heard it said in some earlier period of his career that he bore a strange resemblance to the ill-fated Stuarts; and in his mouth he had a holder of his own contrivance which enabled him to smoke two cigars at once.
Although the text continually mentions that Hook is angry, cruel and gloomy, the author does not ignore the captain’s qualities such as courage , mental activity and the ability to be merciful - though unrealized. The captain is lonely and often depressed (perhaps suffering from depression ), he has no friends. One of the defining meanings of his life was the desire to maintain a “ good shape ”, not to lose face (that is, to be brought up).
James Hook's biography is not very detailed. It is known that he was born in a decent family and received a good education in Eton . He became the captain of the ship "Jolly Roger", became famous as a pirate. In one of the battles with Peter Pan, he lost his right hand and has been using a hook prosthesis since then. Since James Pan fed Crocodile the severed hand of James, Hook developed some phobias - he is mortally afraid of this animal, now forever following him, the ticking of the clock, and the sight of his own blood (thick, unusual yellow color). The captain always tried to destroy Pan (out of revenge by the hand, but also because the insolence of the eternal boy awoke terrible anger in Hook), but he did not succeed. As a result, having lost the battle with Peter in fact, but having won it mentally - forcing him to show "bad shape": Pan kicked the Captain overboard, where he was devoured by a crocodile.
In the continuation of the tale, Hook is alive, but terribly mutilated with acid from the belly of the crocodile and from the poison, which he himself made, and with which he destroyed his toothy nightmare, making boots out of his skin. The former pirate began to wear clothes made of rags and wool, took the name Ravello, and gathered his own circus with wild animals. James now never sleeps, only eats eggs, and, having won the trust of Peter, who became captain of a former pirate ship, he tries to make a small copy of himself from the boy. When Hook reveals himself at the end of the story, a duel takes place between him and Pan, where the former captain is almost bitten to death by a puppy who flew into Netland with matured Darling and Lost boys at the request of Peter. Wendy pities Hook, covers him with a captain's caftan and kisses him at bedtime. A recovering pirate wakes up with a recovering face, finds his own hook, and swears again to avenge Peter for all the evil that he did to him.
Disney's Captain Hook
The image of the Hook is maximally simplified. Having lost all the positive qualities of character, in the cartoon a pirate shows excessive cowardice and hysteria. In the end, he remains alive, but flees. In the continuation of the cartoon, Captain Hook confronts Peter Pan again. It also turns out that the crocodile may have been killed, but Hook is now chased by a giant octopus , which squishes with its tentacles and twitches its eyes to the beat of a tick.
Captain Hook in the Soviet television movie Peter Pan
In the film of Leonid Nechaev, the role of James Hook is played by Alexander Trofimov . Hook's appearance is quite close to that described in the book, although the captain braids his hair in a braid , and does not curl . It is mentioned that Hook, unlike all members of his gang, was born not on the thirteenth on Friday, but on Monday.
Having retained charisma , Hook Trofimova shows much less positive qualities than his book prototype. James's motivation is not maintaining a “good shape”, preserving his face, but the desire to be the most famous and scary. He hates the boys and Peter Pan mainly because they are not afraid of him, and believes that even if this hatred is a manifestation of mental illness, it is not worthwhile to be treated for it. It is curious that the historical duel with Peter Pan, after which the crocodile began to hunt for Hook, took place in the form of a game of chess on the seashore, and Hook tried to cheat by hiding the opponent’s piece in the water, for which he paid with a hand that the crocodile bit off. In the final battle with Peter, he falls overboard by accident, having missed.
Captain Hook in the movie of the same name
The ambiguous image of the character of Barry’s book is practically preserved, with the exception of appearance - the hook performed by Hoffman is swarthy and dark-eyed, and his prosthesis is on his left and not on his right hand (possibly because the actor is right-handed ). Another difference is that Hook has almost no hair here and therefore wears a wig identical to his hair in his youth. This may be due to the fact that Hook is old and now looks like a youthful baron , rather than a pirate.
In the film, Hook apparently survived after the final meeting with the Crocodile, from which a stuffed animal with a clock in his teeth was later made. But now he had a new fear - a clock, its ticking, connected with the old fear of a crocodile, warning of its arrival by the ticking of a clock. Here, Hook appears not so much as an adult, but as an old man, afraid of his old age - and therefore angry and cruel. He still wants to get the better of Peter Pan and considers the fact that Peter became an adult to be a betrayal. In the final battle with him, he is defeated, but he is trying to treacherously kill Peter who has mercy on him. Having failed, it disappears under the crocodile scarecrow that has fallen on it. At the same time, an eructation is heard, so it is possible that the scarecrow ate Hook.
Captain Hook in P.J. Hogan's Peter Pan movie
Hook's appearance in the film is closest to Barry's description. His role is played by Jason Isaacs , who also played Mr. Darling, thereby preserving the tradition of the play. However, the character that retained the main features of the original, still has significant differences. James Hook is rather a romantic character, in any case, his problem is not to maintain his face, “good shape”, but rather his feelings for Peter Pan, complex and painful so much that Hook has only one desire - to destroy the boy who tormented him. Isaac’s hook is generally more sensitive and less introverted than the book’s image; it even provokes sympathy for Wendy for some time, which he tries to make a member of his team, giving her the nickname “Bloody Mary” (in the original - Red-armed Jill Handed Jill )). The final confrontation with Peter Pan ends with Hook admitting defeat, old age, after which he falls right into the jaws of a crocodile.
Captain Hook in the series Once Upon a Time
In this series, the appearance and story of Hook almost do not coincide with the book ones. His role is played by Colin O'Donoghue , he first appears in the second season and immediately becomes one of the main characters. In the series, his real name is Killian Jones, and he comes from our world.
Young Killian was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy and served under the guidance of his brother, Captain Liam Jones. The worldview of Killian, devoted to his kingdom, was shaken after an expedition to Neverland, during which his brother died. He became a pirate as a result of the death of his brother and blamed the king. He had an affair with Rumpelstiltskin's wife, Mila, who escaped for her husband and son Belfire, staging death. When Belfire disappeared into the unknown, Rumpelstiltskin (already a Dark Mage) found out the truth about his wife and killed her. In a duel with Jones, he chopped off his left hand, and Killian tried to take revenge by killing Rumpelstiltskin with an iron hook, but he was invulnerable. After that, Jones turned that hook into a prosthesis and took the name "Captain Hook." Together with his team, he sailed to Netland to come up with a worthy revenge on Rumpelstiltskin there. There he met the Lost Boys, but did not meet Peter Pan.
After some time, Belfire enters Netland, brought there from London by the shadow of Peter Pan. The hook takes him into custody and becomes attached to him, but in the end, Bay finds out the truth. The captain admits that he and Mila wanted to take him to him when he grows up, but Bay refuses and leaves. Upon returning to his homeland in the Enchanted Forest after an unsuccessful attempt to kill Belle, he was soon hired by Queen Regina (the stepmother of Snow White) to get into Wonderland and kill Cora - Regina's mother, who became Queen of Hearts. However, Cora exposed Hook and made a deal with him: he would take her with him alive so that she would find out the reasons for her death. Regina, looking at the supposedly dead mother, admits to her that she did this because she loves her mother, and love is a weakness (as Cora herself taught her). Having realized that the daughter will soon activate her curse, the witch creates a force field in the part of the Enchanted Forest, which will not allow the curse to affect this part of the forest; nonetheless, they have to wait 28 years while time remains frozen. When the curse breaks, Hook and Bark fall into Storybrooke. However, he is torn between the two sides, because he cares only about revenge Rumpelstiltshenu. As a result, thanks to Emma Swan, the main heroine of the series, and her son Henry (whose father is Belfire), he changes from the inside and refuses revenge, deciding to help the heroes in saving Henry and the battle with Peter Pan. After the death of Mila, Killian believed that he could no longer ever fall in love, but fell in love with Emma, and she reciprocated.
Although in the series, Hook lost his hand differently from the book, the original story is beaten by the fact that Hook considers Rumpelstiltskin to be like a crocodile because after turning into a sorcerer his face became golden and scaly. [6]
Captain Hook in the movie Pan: Journey to Netland
In this film, Hook performed by Garrett Hedlund is represented by the young and one of the main characters. Here, his personality and biography are completely changed, and besides, he has two hands. He is an ally of Peter Pan, since the villain in this film is the black beard pirate, in the mine of which he works. He also had a liking for Tiger Lily.
