Jive records are mostly known for the success of their hip-hop artists in the 1980s, and boy bands in the late 1990s. The label remained independent until 2002, when the Bertelsmann Music Group acquired it for $ 2.74 billion.

Name Origin

The word “jive” was inspired by Township Jive , a form of South African music and dance.

History

Appearance

Zomba, the parent company of Jive, was established as a publishing and management company in London. Her first client was Robert John “Matt” Lang. Initially, the founders Ralph Simon and Clive Calder wanted to be aloof from the record labels, focusing on songwriters and producers working for other labels [1] . Later, in the 70s, Zomba opened offices in the United States, where Calder started a business relationship with Clive Davis , whose label Arista Records began distributing material created by Zomba artists.

R&B and Hip Hop in the 1980s

When Calder and Simon founded Jive Records in 1977, Davis had a problem locating rock artists in North America. So for Jive and Matta Lang the task was defined. The first artists of the label were Tight Fit , A Flock of Seagulls , Billy Ocean and Samantha Fox . However, Calder had other plans for the fate of the label. He found Barry Weiss , who was familiar with the local hip-hop scene, and with it he began to form the Whodini band [2] . In 1987, Jive completed distribution through Arista, freeing herself from the power of Davis, known for his dislike of hip-hop. By the late 1980s, Jive Records had signed hip hop artists Too $ hort and Schoolly D. By the late 1990s, the label became fundamental in this genre, thanks in large part to the successes of Kool Moe Dee , Whodini , & The Fresh Prince , E-40 , A Tribe Called Quest , KRS-One / Boogie Down Productions , and R&B artists - R. Kelly and Aaliyah .

Pop direction in the 1990s

By the late 1990s, despite his successful reputation in the hip hop community, Jive had signed up with several pop artists: Backstreet Boys , * NSYNC , and Britney Spears , who gained fame in the 2000s, becoming the top three best-selling artists for the whole history of the label. In 1991, Barry Weiss became CEO and President of Jive Records. He will leave his post in April 2011 to move to the service in the Universal Music Group [3] .

Close

In the summer of 2011, the RCA Music Group announced the restructuring of J records, Jive and Arista on October 7th [4] . All label releases will be distributed by RCA Records [5] [6] [4] .
