Ermolovich, Dmitry Ivanovich

In 1969 he entered and in 1974 he graduated with honors from the translation department of the Moscow Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages ​​named after Maurice Torez ), where he then studied in correspondence postgraduate study. The student of linguists and translators Ya. I. Retsker , V. N. Komissarov , A. D. Schweitzer, S. A. Burlyai.

He worked as a translator, including a synchronized interpreter, in the system of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, in the TASS news agency . In 1977-1980, he was Deputy Director of UN Courses for specialists in demography from developing countries at Moscow State University .

In 1981 he defended a dissertation at Moscow State Linguistic University on the topic “Functional-semantic structure of individualizing English characters” (supervisor - V. N. Komissarov), in 2005 - a doctoral dissertation “Foundations of translation onomastics” ^[1] .

From 1980 to 2015, he taught practice and theory of translation at Moscow State Linguistic University (MSLU) , where from 1999 he held the position of professor.

Since 2014, she has been (on a voluntary basis) the editor-in-chief of the Auditorium publishing house, which produces educational and translated literature. Since 2017, he has been the head of the jury of the Cosinus Pi International Professional Translation Competition, held at Moscow State University.

The author of a large number of publications in the field of linguistics , bilingual lexicography and translation, teaching aids. Translator of works of art from English and French.

He was one of the founders (February 2004), a member of the editorial board and an active author of the translation magazine "Bridges". In January 2018, he left the editorial board with two of its other members due to disagreement with the policies of the publisher and editor-in-chief of the magazine ^[2] .

In works on onomastics, D. I. Ermolovich developed a functional-semantic concept, according to which proper names are endowed with a value ( sign ), consisting of a number of semantic components ^[3] . He described the linguistic antinomies inherent in the interlanguage transfer of proper names, and developed a typology and methodology for the formation of onomastic correspondences in translation and bilingual lexicography ^{[4] [5]} . He compiled rules for the practical transcription of names from European and a number of eastern languages ​​into Russian ^[6] . Noting the shortcomings in the established practice of transferring Russian proper names to other languages, D. I. Ermolovich proposed a system of Cyrillic-Latin transliteration based on the principles of mutual uniqueness, regularity and universality of correspondences ^[7] .

In translation studies he dealt with the problems of situational translation ^[8] , the false friends of the translator ^[9] , as well as lacunology in the direction of developing the concepts of random gaps and the lexical-semantic text grid ^[10] . He also published works on the methodology of teaching translation, problems of interpretation and literary translation, and critical and popular science articles.

He developed a number of translation training programs for universities and, based on them, the university textbook “Russian-English translation” (complete with guidelines and keys) ^[11] - the most comprehensive educational complex in this discipline, which is widely used by linguistic universities and faculties of the country.

D. I. Ermolovich - theorist and practitioner of lexicography, the author of a significant number of dictionaries, among which the most voluminous is the “New Large Russian-English Dictionary” ^[12] , which reflected the massive changes in Russian vocabulary of the late XX - early XXI centuries. The Practical Russian Dictionary ^[13] compiled by him was published in the USA.

Edited by D. I. Yermolovich, the latest editions of the most important monographs of V. N. Komissarov ^{[14] [15]} and Ya. I. Retsker ^[16] (the latter also supplemented by D. I. Yermolovich) were published.

Based on archival research, D. I. Ermolovich compiled the most detailed biography of the lexicographer and writer V. K. Muller ^[17] , information about which was previously not available in public sources. He also discovered and published under his editorship the previously unknown manuscript of V. K. Müller “Pushkin and Shakespeare” ^[18] .

He made a new translation of all the main works of Lewis Carroll, publishing them along with comments explaining the semantic subtexts and literary techniques of the author and analyzing the problems of their translation ^{[19] [20] [21] [22]} . He has published a number of articles on these topics, including in specialized foreign journals ^[23] .

D. I. Ermolovich became the first translator into Russian of two books by the English writer William Gilbert (one of them in collaboration) ^{[24] [25]} , as well as a series of children's books by the French writer Charles Robert-Dumas ^{[26] [27]} .

Thanks to the special education received at art schools, including the Moscow Secondary Art School (now the Moscow Academic Art Lyceum ), D. I. Ermolovich acts as an illustrator. In particular, he completed a series of full-page color illustrations of Lewis Carroll's works published in his translations ^{[28] [29] [30]} .

D. I. Ermolovich told about the principles of his work as an illustrator in the article “How I Drew Through the Looking Glass” ^[31] .
