Mississauga [1] ( Eng. Mississauga /ˌmɪ.sɪˈsɔːɡə/ [2] [3] , / ˌmɪsəˈsɑːgə / [4] ) is a city in Canada , in the province of Ontario , with a population of 713,443 people, according to the 2011 census. The sixth largest city in Canada. Located in the Peel area , part of Greater Toronto .

Title
The name migrated to English from the French Mississague [2] . The toponym Mississauga comes from the ethnonym indigenous Mississauga Indians. The name from the Ojibwe language Misi-zaagiing translates as “ [Those who live at the] mouth of the Great River ” [2] . The river was called Misswezahging - "the river of many estuaries " [5] .
In common parlance, the name of the city is pronounced in truncated Soga ( English Sauga /ˈsɒ.ɡə/) [6] [7] .
Population
The Mississauga population has nearly doubled over the past two decades. The city grew at the fastest rate in Canada (by 89,500 people between the censuses of 1986 and 1991; 80,994 - between 1991 and 1996, that is, an increase of 17.5%). From 2001 to 2006, the population grew by 9.1%. Out of 713.4 thousand people. (2011 census) 45.8% were of European origin (including Italian 46 thousand, Polish 44 thousand, Portuguese 35 thousand). There are many immigrants from Asia - 311 thousand - 43.9% (most of all Indians are 107 thousand, Chinese 60.7 thousand, Filipinos 42.5 thousand, Pakistanis 27 thousand, Arabs 25 thousand).
Description
In 2006, an international architectural and design competition was held for the construction of 50-story Absolute World condominium towers , which were built in 2010-2012 and became the symbol of the city. Since 1978, the city has not borrowed money from the state. The city has 7 major highways connecting important sites of Canada and the USA , including the Pearson International Airport (Toronto Pearson International Airport). Mississauga is also known as one of the largest corporate and financial centers in Canada with the headquarters of the Canadian branches of many international companies ( Microsoft , Pepsico , General Electric , Wal Mart , as well as other Fortune 500 companies ).
Geography
The Mississauga occupies 288.42 square kilometers (110 sq. Miles) of land [8] and 13 kilometers (8.1 miles) of Lake Ontario .
