Biography

She received the first music lessons from her father, clarinetist Karl Mayer, then studied with Otto Germann in Stuttgart and Hans Deinzer in Hanover . Her professional debut took place at 16 years old. She became a soloist in the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and in 1982 Herbert von Karajan invited her to the position of the first clarinet in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra - for the first time in the history of the orchestra's existence, the tradition of not taking women into the orchestra was violated. This decision of Karayan had a great resonance in the music world. A year later, Mayer, not accepted by colleagues in the orchestra, left him, deciding to pursue a soloist career. During these years, Mayer has performed with more than 80 professional orchestras in Germany and other European countries, as well as in North America, Japan, Brazil, Israel, Africa and Australia. In 1983, Mayer founded the Clarone Trio with her brother Wolfgang and her husband Rainer Vele, and in 1988 , the Sabina Mayer Wind Instrument Ensemble. The Clarone Trio made a number of records with jazz clarinetists Eddie Daniels and Michael Riesler. Mayer received the Echo Award six times from the German Academy of Sound Recording - more than any other classical musician. In her repertoire - almost all concert, solo and chamber compositions for clarinet. She also works with the music of contemporary composers. Her album "Contemporary Works for Wind Ensembles" was a great success, including recordings of music by Denisov , Hosokawa , Castiglioni, Obst and Raskatov .
