Description

The total length of the family ranges from 4 to 19 cm. There is no tongue, they grab prey with their front legs. All species lead an exclusively aquatic lifestyle and have numerous morphological features corresponding to their habitat. For example, the legs are completely webbed , the body is flattened, there is a system of lateral lines . In addition, Pipov's hearing aid is modified, so they can make and hear sounds underwater.

Distribution

They live in tropical South America (genus Pipa ) and sub- Saharan Africa (the rest).
