Geographically located mainly in the Dukhovshchinsky district of the Smolensk region. Highest point: 285.2 m above sea level in the north-western part, southeast decreases. It is composed of dolomite and Devon and Carboniferous limestones. The Dnieper moraine forms a significant stratum, reaching its surface in some places. Relief: gently undulating, in places flat moraine plains. On the western slope there is a sublime hilly-ridge relief - the Bielsko-Dukhovshchinskie ridge. The upland forms the watershed of the Zapadnaya Dvina and Dnieper river basins. On the hill begins the river Khmost .
