Geographically located from the city of Orsha in Belarus to the Mozhaisk district of the Moscow region , mainly in the Smolensk region . Highest point: 319.8 meters above sea level (near the village of Maryino, Vyazemsky district, Smolensk region). In the western part of the hill it is composed of Devonian dolomites and limestones, east of Smolensk - limestones, clays, marls of carbon. The moraine-erosion relief; in the northwestern part a large hilly ridge. Large rivers rise on a hill: Desna , Ugra , Moscow , etc.
On the Smolensk Upland there are so-called “river gates” - a natural corridor between the Dnieper and the Western Dvina rivers , the only way from West to East (from the Vistula to the upper Volga ) from the Baltic to the Black Sea without crossing large river barriers.
