Boris Ivanovich Piip ( November 6, 1906 , St. Petersburg - March 10, 1966 , Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky ) - Soviet geologist , petrograph, volcanologist . Founder and first director of the Institute of Volcanology SB RAS USSR [1] [2] ( 1962 - 1966 ). Specialist in the dynamics, physics and chemistry of volcanic eruptions, thermal waters.

Biography
He graduated from the Leningrad Mining Institute in 1931 .
After graduation - assistant and assistant professor of petrography at the same institute until 1938 . He conducted field research in Kamchatka and the Urals .
Since 1940 he worked at the Laboratory of Volcanology of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
In 1940–1946 and 1950–1954 - head of the Kamchatka Volcanological Station.
Since 1963 - Director of the Institute of Volcanology, USSR Academy of Sciences .
The works are devoted to the study of volcanoes, thermal springs and the geological structure of Kamchatka. He studied in detail a number of volcanic eruptions of various types. His works contain factual data on the dynamics, physics and chemistry of eruptions and the origin of thermal waters.
He was buried in Moscow at the Novodevichy cemetery [3] .
Awards and Prizes
- He was awarded the Order of the Red Star and medals.
- For a monograph on the volcanoes of the Klyuchevsky group, Piip was awarded the prize of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1956.
