Biography
Born in Yalta in a Karaite family. My father worked as a clerk in a musical instrument store [1] . Mother, Sarah Osipovna, on the eve of the Yalta conference was expelled from Yalta to the Sverdlovsk region [2] . Sister Anna was the wife of Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences V. L. Kretovich [2] . The basics of drawing and painting were comprehended in the studio of the artist L. V. Brumer in Yalta [3] . In 1924 he entered the graphic faculty of VKhUTEIN [4] . He studied under Vladimir Andreevich Favorsky [1] . After the dissolution, VKhUTEIN continued his studies at the publishing department of the Polygraphic Institute, which he graduated in 1931 [4] and where he later taught for a short time. He worked as a designer, set designer [1] , in 1949 - 1953 . Deputy Chief Artist of the State Historical Museum [4] . In 1962 he joined the Union of Artists of the USSR [4] . He was engaged in book illustration a lot: among the works published with Kojak's graphics were “ Journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow ” by Radishchev, “The Womb of Paris” Zola, “The Lady with the Dog ” by Chekhov , “The Star” by Kazakevich. A special place in the work of Kodzhak-illustrator is occupied by the first edition of the William Faulkner trilogy ( 1963 ): the novels The Village, The City, The Mansion. In the original work of Kodzhak there are many landscapes, both Crimean and Moscow Region, often painted with colored pencils, watercolors, and gouache. Kojak also wrote still lifes, he owns several self-portraits. Only after the death of the widow of Kojak in 2007 , art critics gained access to a significant layer of works, until then hidden in the family archive - are paintings with naked female nature. In its aesthetics, Kojak is close to the French post-Impressionists - Cezanne , Matisse .
During his life, Kojak did not have a personal exhibition. Only in 1986 , the first exhibition of Kodzhak was held in Moscow in the exhibition halls on Begovaya [1] .
