Thomas Kirkwood ( born Thomas Burton Loram Kirkwood ; born July 6, 1951 , Durban , Natal , South Africa ) is a British biologist.

Biography

Since 1954 he lives in England. He graduated from Cambridge University , a master's degree in mathematics ( 1972 ), a bachelor's degree in applied statistics at Oxford University ( 1973 ), and a dissertation in biology at Cambridge ( 1983 ). In 1973 - 1981 employee of the statistics department of the National Institute of Biological Standards and Control, in 1981 - 1988 . Researcher, Computer Laboratory, National Institute for Medical Research, London, 1988 - 1993 Head of the Laboratory of Mathematical Biology at the same institute. In 1993 - 1999 Professor of Gerontology, University of Manchester (the first professorship in the UK in this specialty). He is currently Director of the Institute for Aging and Health at the School of Clinical Medical Research, University of Newcastle .

Kirkwood put forward ( 1977 ) and is developing one of the basic mathematical models of aging - the theory of one-time soma .
