History and architecture

Elizaveta Petrovna ordered to build a monastery on the site of a small palace at the Smolny courtyard - so-called. Smolny House, where she often lived in adolescence. The church with house churches and an extremely high bell tower, as well as an institute for girls from noble families, were to enter the monastic complex.

The development of the project was entrusted to the court architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli . The Smolny Cathedral was laid on October 30, 1748 , and after the construction of all the foundations of the ensemble in May 1751, they began to erect walls. Soon the war with Prussia began , after which funding for construction was not enough and construction went slowly.

After the death of the last of the 14 nuns of the "House of the widow" in 1797 the monastery was abolished. The cathedral of the former monastery was completed by architect Vasily Stasov only in 1835 . The high bell tower was not built not so much because of a lack of funds, but because of the analysis of the monastery ensemble model [2] . Divine services in the cathedral continued until 1923.

Institute of Noble Maidens

In 1764, Catherine the Second established an institute of noble maidens at the monastery (the institute was opened on June 28, 1764 ); it was planned that nuns who came here from other monasteries would be engaged in raising young girls. However, the nuns invariably proved incapable of engaging in teaching, as a result of which “Catherine II, after all, had to admit that the monastery could not have a future” [3] .

Modernity

In the XXI century, various institutions are located in the buildings of the former monastery, including the Faculty of Sociology of St. Petersburg State University , the Faculty of International Relations of St. Petersburg State University , and since 2009 the Faculty of Political Science of St. Petersburg State University.
