Biography
Alphonse Liguori was born into a noble Neapolitan family, the first of seven children. At 16, he entered the legal department of the university, became a lawyer, but 11 years later, after losing another case, he decided to leave the profession and, as a result, in 1723 , took up spiritual education in preparation for church service. At the age of 30, Alphonse was ordained a priest and served among the Naples poor as a “ home missionary ”, and soon became famous for his simple, consistent style of sermons and attention to those who confess .
In 1732, St. Alphonse founded the Congregation of the Holy Savior - a religious order aimed at preaching among the poor in cities and villages, as well as opposing Jansenism . After thirty years of service in Naples, he was appointed bishop of St. Agatha in 1762 , being already seriously ill. In 1777, Liguori was at the center of the conflict between the papacy and secular authorities, seeking to limit the activities of the Redemptorists, in which the king saw the successors of the Jesuits . Involuntarily going to meet the king, he incurred the anger of the pope and was removed from the post of bishop and leader of the Congregation.
Alfonso Liguori owns 111 spiritual books published in 72 languages.
