The administrative center is the village of Temkino , 2 692 inhabitants ( 2007 ).
Content
Geography
Geographically, the region borders: in the north with Gagarinsky , in the west with Vyazemsky , in the south-west with Ugransky districts of Smolensk region. In the south, southeast and east it borders with the Kaluga region , in the northeast with the Moscow region . The area of the district is 1324.25 km².
The north and northeast of the region is located on the Gzhat-Protvinsk Upland, the southern part in the Ugran lowland. Soils in the area are soddy-medium and strongly podzolic. Forests occupy 45.4% of the territory, in the past forests were part of the famous Bryn forests. In 1975, in the region on the territory of the Temkinsky and Fedotkovskoye lesnichestvo, the Temkinsky state reserve was created.

History
The district was created in 1929 from parts of the Yukhnovsky and Gzhatsky districts of the Smolensk province and the Medyn district of the Kaluga province. In 1963 he was annexed to the Gzhat district. In its present form it was created in 1972 .
