It was created on May 21, 1955 under the name "Faculty of Theoretical and Experimental Physics" with the division of a single engineering physics department (into the current T and F). May 25, 1957 renamed the "Faculty of Experimental and Theoretical Physics (ETF)."
The dean of the faculty is Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Belyaev Vladimir Nikitich.

Training
The scientific and pedagogical activity of the faculty is formed with the active participation of academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences A. N. Skrinsky , A. M. Baldin, N. G. Basov , V. I. Goldansky, Yu. M. Kagan , B. B. Kadomtsev, L. B Perch. Of the 460 faculty teachers, more than 120 are doctors of science. Two leading scientific schools of Russia are headed by professors of the faculty, corresponding members of the RAS Yu. G. Abov and L.P. Feoktistov. A feature of teaching at the faculty is the preparation of students according to individual plans both on the basis of the university and in the branches of departments in the leading scientific centers of the country: the Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences , the Russian Research Center Kurchatov Institute , the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna), etc.

Scientists, trainees and graduate students are actively involved in the implementation of national scientific programs in the framework of international cooperation with the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) , the German Electronic Synchrotron (DESY) , Superconducting Super Collider (SSC, USA), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL, USA) , Photon factory (KEK, Japan), etc.
