Properties

The number of dimethylsiloxane units in the structure can reach 15 thousand . Depending on the polymer chain length, substances with different physical properties are obtained. The viscosity of such compounds increases with increasing length, which corresponds to the transition from very mobile, gasoline-like liquids to more viscous oils and, finally, to resinous substances.

Application

  • Food supplement E900 ( Dimethylpoly-siloxane ).
  • In the manufacture of heat-resistant greases.
  • As a basis for defoamers.
  • Agent for shock absorber, hydraulic, damping and cooling fluids, high and low temperature coolants.
  • As a dielectric in the manufacture of radio components (transformers, capacitors, etc.)
  • As a plasticizer for various elastomers.
  • Reagent in the decoration of fabrics and leathers, sizing for woolen semi-finished products.
  • Used in gas chromatography.
  • In the production of household chemicals, paint and varnish production.
  • In the manufacture of cosmetics, pharmacology and medicine.
  • A key component of kinetic sand (mixed with substrate).

Polymethylsiloxane polyhydrate (polymethylsiloxane has a chemical formula different from polydimethylsiloxane, see the corresponding article) is registered as a medicine in Russia and the CIS countries [1] , and in the countries of the European Union, Serbia, New Zealand [2] [3] - as a “medical device”, since the product is not absorbed into the blood and acts only in the gastrointestinal tract as an adsorbent, it fits the European Commission Classification according to the corresponding definition [ clarify ] [4] ( eng. medical device class IIa ; CE 1023 - Certificate No. 110058 QS / NB) [5] . It is distributed, in particular, under the brand name Enterosgel. It has an enterosorbing and detoxifying effect, it is used for acute and chronic intoxications of various origins.

Thanks to an active advertising campaign (in particular, in 2003 it was even among the 20 most advertised drugs in Ukraine in the press [6] ), the drug was distributed in several countries (see above). In world practice it is not widely used, while only in Russia and the CIS (without Ukraine) more than 40,000,000 (Forty million doses) are produced annually by the manufacturer of TNK SILMA LLC. [7] .
