The name comes from the ancient Baltic Ape - water, river and the Old Russian suffix ec - small.
In the lower reaches, the width of the river is 5-7 m, the depth is about 2 m. The banks are steep 3-4 m high, overgrown with vine.

Along with the Vyazma River, it is considered the dirtiest river in the Smolensk region, which is due to the vast effluents of industry and housing and communal services of the city of Safonovo , through which it flows.
