Light well

Light well diagram

Light well ( English light tube or light pipe ) - equipment for lighting rooms using natural sunlight. A light well is a tube that transmits sunlight with minimal loss. The simplest version of a light well is a hole in the ceiling, for example, a tundyuk in a yurt.

Solar wells are used to illuminate both industrial and residential buildings in the daytime. They can be used in large industrial buildings: warehouses, workshops, underground premises, etc.

For the first time, a solar well was launched in Australia in 1991 with a 1986 patent.

A light well with a diameter of 300 mm is capable of illuminating an area of 8 m². One well allows under European conditions to prevent annual emissions of up to 7.4 tons of CO 2 into the atmosphere.

Light wells with fiber optics were developed in 2004 in the USA . In the upper part of such a well, parabolic collectors are used.

The use of solar wells can reduce energy consumption, in winter - to reduce the shortage of sunlight in people in the building.

Light well demonstrating the collection of light, its transmission and scattering in the room

The design of the solar well is similar to the periscope , with the difference that the well does not need to transmit an image. The simplest light well for developing countries is a two-liter transparent plastic bottle filled with water in the roof. [1] For more efficient light transmission to the room, more advanced devices are used. A light collector, represented by a transparent dome made of glass or acrylic, is attached to the roof or on the external wall of the building. The task of the upper part is to collect as much sunlight as possible. For this, various collectors, reflectors and even Fresnel lenses are used . Light is transmitted through the well with greater efficiency if the well is straight and short. If the well has angles, turns, or a large length, then part of the light is scattered. To minimize losses, transparent materials with a high reflectivity (for example, optical fiber ) are used. The lower part is displayed in the room where devices are installed that scatter sunlight.
