Adblock Plus is the most popular extension for the Firefox browser [5] . According to the official website of Mozilla Firefox , as of August 2017, it has more than 13 million active users (9% of them are Russian-speaking) and has been downloaded more than 450 million times [6] .

Adblock Plus can also be installed on a mobile device with Android or iOS as a separate Adblock Browser application.

Content

Principle of Operation

Adblock Plus blocks HTTP requests in accordance with the source addresses and can block various types of page elements, such as images, iframes , scripts , Flash and Java objects, and so on. It also uses hiding rules - style sheets to hide elements, such as text ads on the page, as they load, instead of blocking them; and pop-up blocker rules [7] .

History

A previous version of the program, Adblock, was released by Henrik Sorensen in 2002 for the Firefox 1.0 browser [8] . In 2004, Michael MacDonald released a fork of this extension called “Adblock Plus” and version 0.5, which had a better interface, support for centralized filter lists and the ability to hide page elements. Key innovations:

  • White lists.
  • Support blocking background images.
  • Subscribing to fixed address filters and automatic updates.
  • The ability to hide HTML elements.
  • The ability to hide ads for each site, and not just globally.
  • Memory leak bug fixes

In 2006, MacDonald stopped developing and handed over the project to Vladimir Palant (Wladimir Palant), who released Adblock Plus 0.6 with the rewritten code in January 2006 [8] .

NoScript and AdBlock Plus Developer Conflict

On May 1, 2009, Vladimir Palant announced that another popular extension, NoScript , was modifying his product settings by adding several advertising sites sponsored by NoScript authors to the AdBlock Plus (ABP) white list [9] .

According to the NoScript developer, Georgio Maone, the reason pushing him to modify someone else’s product was the “too aggressive” blocking of the above ads [10] .

This incident caused a very negative reaction from users and forced the author of NoScript to cancel such a modification in the next version.

Rewards

PC World magazine rated Adblock Plus one of the 100 best products of 2007 (95th place) [11] .

In March 2010, CeBIT was recognized as the best Open Source add-on for Firefox [12] .

Subscriptions

Subscription for Adblock Plus is a text list of ready-made filtering rules with the obligatory indication of the minimum version of Adblock Plus, which is required for the subscription rules to work correctly. The subscription is usually posted on the site and should be regularly updated. Subscriptions are created separately from Adblock Plus by many authors.

The list of subscriptions recommended for different countries and for different languages is built into the extension and the user can select subscriptions from this list, as well as any others. A slightly larger list is published on the Adblock Plus website. It is not recommended to install all or many subscriptions, as this affects both the speed and the number of false positives (as a rule, each subscription is designed primarily for sites in a particular language).

Subscriptions for Russian-language sites
  • RU AdList - recommended subscription for browsers with Russian localization (when installing Adblock Plus it is proposed to install it). Constantly updated, is an addition to the EasyList subscription. You can also subscribe to additional subscriptions on the RU AdList website: to block statistical counters on the Internet, extra site elements, to partially block pornography (but the authors of the subscription recommend using the CensureBlock extension, first of all, not to block this pornography).

Add-ons

Adblock Plus and other extension developers have created add-ons that extend the capabilities of Adblock Plus:

Element Hiding Helper (author - Vladimir Palant) - an extension that greatly simplifies the compilation of rules for hiding [7] (not blocking) for Adblock Plus. Using these rules is possible without the Element Hiding Helper.

AdChange For AdblockPlus is an experimental extension (created by Thibaut Mathieu) that replaces the removed Adblock Plus advertisement with pictures from the user's local disk or online albums.
